hayze, congrats on the 6 apps sent & NJPaladin that's great re: the acceptances!

JerseyShoreMom--our kids seem to be interested in similar schools. Son applied to Penn STate but just put Univ Park as first choice w/no-back up (doesn't want another campus).

Son has sent about 12 apps so far. Husband promised to buy him a video game if he finished apps (arg...got tired of son & I talking about it I guess). Of course, w/that external, artificial reward, son banged out a few essays with not a single re-write or review by anyone else (including for grammar, spelling--he definitely needs review in those areas). Now I'm banging my head against the wall but trying to make sure the last few, remaining apps are about 'timeliness AND quality.'

Good luck to all! Be interested to hear how everyone's search progresses.

D definately needs to finalize the applications this week and send them out FRIDAY. The deadline for Florida State looms at October 10th, we also need to give a list to the GC and make sure the rec's are sent, too.

ACT scores are coming out this week, so that should be exciting too, since she used her "free" reports for her top 4 choices!

Now I have to think about either signing her up for the October ACT or just go with these scores and hope for better on the SATs on 10/4 but she's much better at taking the ACT. She needs to bump up her score, but she feels confident she did much better in Sept than she did in June (her first time taking the ACT).

Son submitted the Common App to four schools on Saturday. Transcripts STILL aren't available. He has essays left for two non-Common App schools. What he doesn't realize or recall is that some of the schools have merit scholarships that require separate applications and essays. After he presses the submit buttons on all of his apps, I think I'll give him a few weeks before I nag him to start on the scholarship apps.

missypie--same here. Going to take a breather after all apps are in, then jump in (parents) to the financial side and have son do the scholarship apps. That's great he got in 4 common app schools! Son liked the ease of those, too.

Oh missypie! I am right there with you! Even though D2 has been accepted I still have the box of all the school and coaches' letters. sigh....I keep thinking what if....
Good luck with the scholarship/financial apps coming up!

It's pretty final, now, the removal of schools from the list/throwing out the files (now or never).

I'm having some panic attacks when I read the schools kids on CC are applying to (w/better stats than son) and realize what a large percentage of reaches son has on his list. Kind of wish I hadn't listened so much to family members who said, "don't foreclose any opportunity!" Just hoping he gets into some safeties/matches and likes them!!!! Kind of thinking we should even throw a few more matches onto his already humungeous list. But he says: "no more!!"

we kept Penn State on the list and did not choose a back up campus ( I also tried to sell Altoona and had no luck!). Her choice of major has to finish up the last 2 years at UP so maybe that may help...
GC is dragging her feet. She met with D prior to sending apps, D dropped of packets to her on Monday, and she says she needs to meet with her again before she mails out transcripts and recommendations. Waste of time...

I'm from California and so far, most of the colleges mentioned here seem to be East of the Rockies. My daughter is a junior in h.s. and so far has a 4.0 GPA. HOWEVER, I'm visiting the B+ thread because I'm being realistic. This is her first year of AP classes, not to mention a college Pre-Calculus class she's taking. She's basically in her room hovered over her books all the time now. She's got some tough classes. So, she may not end up all As, depending on how these last two years go. We'll see!

Anyone have any idea how Cal Poly SLO is for B++ students?
UC Berkleley, UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego? How about USC?

We now have an Honors program at our local community college for kids who are coming from a more intense academic background, but for some reason (maybe financial), have opted to go to a cc their first two years. It makes it easier to transfer into a good 4 year school.

I think the UC schools have a matrix on their website that -- when you enter the student's SAT or ACT scores and gpa--- tells you how they fall in terms of meeting the minimal cut-off for admission. Maybe that would help? If your daughter has a 4.0 going into her jr year and also has a good work ethic--she's doing well! If she struggles w/a certain class, I personally wouldn't be adverse to hiring a tutor to help (junior yr is important...).

For Berkeley, consider that of the 16,000 who applied in 2007 with a 4.0 or better, 8000 were accepted. The average weighted GPA of fall 2008 admitted freshman was 4.35. So while it's not impossible for a B++ student to get it, it's very difficult and would require outstanding test scores.

If your D has a 4.0, she's got an excellent shot at both Cal Poly and the other UCs in your list. Remember that the UC GPA calculation takes grades 10-11 only, and caps the weighted classes at 8 semesters (ie, if your D takes 10 semesters of weighted classes, she can only get credit for 8 of them in her UC GPA). Cal Poly looks at 9-11 GPA.

Cal Poly Pomona is a good safety for students for whom Cal Poly SLO is a match.

"The average weighted GPA of fall 2008 admitted freshman was 4.35"

That's good! I always thought that son's gpa was not great (uw, it's definitely not). But his weighted is above the admitted freshman midpoint. He loves CA, so that's encouraging!!

2Leashes--at least as an instate resident, your CA school costs will be a lot better than oos!

Transcripts finally came out. As I feared, Son has dropped below the top 20% (20.7% to be exact.) I feared this would happen. I compared his transcripts from freshman year to present, and his class rank has remained remarkably static. However, the class size has gone down by 78 students, and almost none of them had a rank above his. A rank that was in the top 16% freshman year is now top 21% with the reduced class size. I told him that the dip would cost us thousands in merit aid. So when someone asked him yesterday where he was going to school, he responded with the name of the only state school on the list. Poor kid!

He hasn't even visited it yet. On the list of 8 schools, he's visited 7 and has two definite favorites. I must have wailed so much about his class rank losing us merit aid $$$ that he has given up on attending his favorites.
