The B+ student parents' thread

Thanks, but I think of it as New England and thus out of the zone–although otherwise right on target.

yabeyabe, Susquehanna, Marist, Hofstra, Ithaca

^Ithaca is pretty far from the mid-Atlantic. I’m guessing that yabeyabe ruled out New England due to distance or weather.

I think of NY as a mid-Atlantic state. Just throwing it out there. BTW, Marist and Hofstra are in NY too.

swtcat - time to get busy prepping for sat or act. those test scores really dont mach her gpa.

my dd is 18% - gpa-u 3.5 and her scores were a good deal higher than your DD’s.

so something doesnt add up. something must be different in the way your D’s school grades for her to have such a high UW gpa and also 25% of the people with even higher grades!

with those scores UT will be pretty much impossible unless you go the CAP route. she may be able to get into a&m, but not as an automatic admit. she should be fine for all other texas public schools with out more testing though.

my DD is doing her own test prep, but some kids need a formal class. depends on what kind of score you think she needs.

I think of lower NY as mid-Atlantic, but Ithaca is in the upper part–just as cold and snowy as New England.

Loyola in MD, Salisbury University (also MD), McDaniel, George Mason in Northern VA, Villanova, St. Joe’s in Phila…

yabe - Have you ruled out Roanoke College because it’s too far south?

Christopher Newport in VA

Thanks for the input…D has a 4.0 for this year but she is not in any Ap classes…she has had a couple of B’s freshmen and sophomore year which has kept her out of the top 10%. Our school is heavy in AP’s and if you don’t take them, there is no way you will be in the top 10%. Ap’s are weighted with a 6 and honor’s with a 5. While she is a great student, she is not a good standardized test taker…she has worked very hard this year to get straight A’s but so has everyone eles…junior year is a hard one…We have discussed the CAP program and will most likely visit UT San Antonio. We have visited OU and OSU which are likely choices for her. She has auto admit to both of them currently. D really enjoyed OSU. We had an excellent tour guide who was informative and engaging and really did a great job of selling the school. She qualifies for $7000/year merit money now with her 25 ACT. The problem is that she wants to major in journalism and OSU’s comm school is not super big.
OU on the other hand has an amazing facility for mass comm and jounalism but after visiting D wasn’t “in love” with it. I think our biggest mistake with OU was that we attended Junior Day and while the program itself was excellent, we had a horrible tour guide…he took us to two places: A single guy’s dorm room & the workout facility (but no tour of it). we did not go to the Student union, Library, or any other building…it was very disappointing…We will be making another triip for a custom tour as OU is only 2.5 hours away…H & I really thought OU would be “it” and so far it is not…
We realize that UT is a super reach and D will be working on her ACT score…she is in a prep class now…We believe based on several diagnositc ACT’s that she will be able to bring that score up…let’s hope…

The bill before the Texas house to allow UT to lessen it’s level of top10%ers at the main campus should be voted on soon. Encourage your friends to contact their representatives! It could really help your daughter.

$7k in merit aid for a 25 is amazing. Sounds like a great option. Definitely check UTSA though, I really hear great things. We may visit in the summer also.

If it matters, I hear that UTSA is getting a football team.

The 7K is for OOS. If you have a 27 they give 8k, and if a 30, 10K…OU on the other hand doesn’t give any OOS merit money unless you have a 29-30. They are still relatively inexpensive for OOS, considering the schools in Texas deregulated thier tuition and they can charge whatever they want… UT is supposedly the most expensive in-state for TX. It will cost about the same as OU OOS. I miss the days of $4.00 a semester hour…does that date me? LOL

Hi Missypie…the problem with that is that it is not D1 football…that’s one of the criteria for D in deciding where she wants to go. I think Texas State has a beautiful campus and from what I hear, they are becoming more selective than Texas Tech, but still no D1 football…

OK, brilliant B+ parents. What do you think of Oxford at Emory? Does a B+ kid have a decent chance to get in there? Does it even make sense to go to a 2 year school? D brought this school up to me as a possibility and I know nothing about it (or what it takes to transfer to Emory after the two years).

Allthisisnewtome…LOL I do think we need to start a thread to commiserate…non top
10%'ers unite…What’s amazing is that D’s friend who is in the top 12-13% has a lower UW GPA than D and almost doesn’t make the auto admit to OU…thier criteria is auto admit with 3.5 GPA and top 25%…isn’t that crazy…there’s so many ways to “play the game” but you have to know how to play first…

Also… I have written both of my legislators…one wrote me back and is a co-author of the bill to revise the top ten rule and the other ignored me… I later found out that he is a supporter of the current rule…it has passed the Senate but I have not heard about the House…although I fear that it is unlikely to pass the House…

SWTCAT

can you link where you found OU merit aid. i have looked, but i am not sure i found anything very tempting.

Can we turn this back into a B+ thread please? (sigh)

Yes, PLEASE do not post here if you have higher than a B+ average.

Mike…that merit aide is for OSU not OU…OU requires a 29-30 for any kind of merit aide for OOS…

Okay…I guess I need to start a thread for the parents of the kids who have an “OK” GPA but are terrible test takers…sorry to infringe…
