The "Bag A Week" Club

Hey! If you want the blazers, KEEP them! Especially if they fit…there is a good chance you will not see them again at the same quality. At size 2, they don’t take up much space!:)

If I can get someone to take the bed as a donation, that is probably my best bet. I have been trying to give it away to people I know but nobody wants it. Our only extra bedroom is 10x10 so really too small for a queen bed, and I plan to put a baby in that room in a couple years anyhow. My dad is getting really ****ed that it’s still in his house, but you’d be surprised how hard it can be to find use for an unneeded brand new bed! I can’t even get anyone to take the frame.

I hope nobody buys my kids stuffed animals. I have literally hundreds. It’s the only “kid” thing I’ve held onto over the years. If my kids get them too there won’t be any more room in the house for me!

H and I have been paring down. I joined this thread in spirit, but didn’t feel the need to post until:

1moremom, another vote, keep the black and cream if they fit. They are too useful.

Then there was the 6000 lbs of trash we tossed out of Mom’s house and got it closed and everything sold. But I came across our old 4H reports. My (older) sister had most of hers, I had 1/2. Poor younger bro had 3 (we were all in for 10 years and bro did cow and horse both). I got a chuckle out of them and was sentimental over sisters (she died 15 years ago). I scanned it so I could look at it again later and sent the folder to her daughter.

So I was mostly posting to support SCAN or photo the cr… ah, important/sentimental papers so that you can pull them out again someday. Maybe an anniversary? Maybe a wedding? Maybe even a funeral (saved Mom’s HS report card for that).

Keep up the good work everyone. H and I have been good about papers, he has been good about books (too good according to kids who wanted the books!) and we both have weeded clothes (nothing comes in unless something goes out) for years. Why then is there SO MUCH FREAKING stuff around here?

^^another vote to keep the blazers. I’ve heard that suggestion about tossing after a few seasons unused, but sometimes you just know that a specific piece will come in handy at a random moment- and then it’s so nice to still have that thing. Blazers and cute fancy shoes are two of mine. And my full length down coat.

Great idea about scanning or photographing kids’ artwork, papers, etc. My kids prefer having things digitized anyway. Much easier for them to keep; also easier when they move. I might only keep really special things in their original state.

I also vote for keeping the blazers, but I’d keep all three. Wear them with jeans for breakfast with a friend. You can probably get more wear out of them than you’ve considered. But don’t get rid of them. They fit, they’re stylish, and they serve a purpose from time to time. And I get the feeling you like them.

Keep the blazers, especially if one is a funeral go-to outfit. I need to do better in the funeral preparation clothing department. I actually have too few clothes–pretty good at purging there. I should ditch any dresses left. Who am I kidding? I’m never going to wear them.

4-H, ohhh–now there’s a need in my house. 38 years between the kids and me; D still has 2. The trophies, the ribbons, the books, the record sheets, the judges’ comments, the posters…I did the MASSIVE clean-out of kids rooms this summer and all the trophies and ribbons made it to the attic. (I know, I know) but…they each bought houses and slowly I’m getting stuff over there. I can paint but paid someone just so there would be a deadline to empty the rooms.

Genealogy is my other difficult area. Become the family historian and you will receive a lot of “stuff” from family members. My ggrandfather kept voluminous records and that’s not somewhrere I feel comfortable destroying the originals.

Main floor - good, I hate clutter. Upstairs - pretty good. Basement - oh the basement…

Keep the blazers.

Ditch the dvd cases and stuffed animals…except the most (3?) sentimental.

Does Goodwill etc still take beds and stuff (bedbug age?).

There was a really great Garrison Keillor song about de-cluttering a few years ago, to the tune of “Turn, Turn, Turn.” It featured the lines “throw out the [I forget], throw out the [again, I forget], even the National Geographics.” Can anyone locate the lyrics? I could use the inspiration.

Decided to get rid of the black blazer; I have enough other black clothes at this point.
Also 86ed of a third of my shoes.

What is a reasonable number of shoes to own? I can’t decide. Thoughts?

What about handbags?

I am pretty sure about items of clothing.

From what I am reading it sounds like goodwill might take the bed, but it sounds like I have to take it into Detroit to get them to take it, which doesn’t sound particularly appealing.

I am just in awe of the fact that I can’t get anyone to take it, it’s brand new. My BIL was going to take it but they didn’t have a car big enough and didn’t want to rent the truck. I am to the point where I will rent the truck, just take the damn bed.

I try to have no more than one or two pairs of shoes for each function… I have one or two pairs of flats (one dressy, one casual), one or two pairs of formal heels, one rainboot, one snowboot, one fashion boot. Two pairs athletic shoes, one indoor and one outdoor. One or two pairs of sandals. That’s about it. Oh, that and 50 pairs of flip flops. D:

ETA: I only have two handbags, one black and one gold and bronze. They are both casual, I could use one more clutch or something for formal events but that’s all I need (I currently use fiance’s suit pants pockets in lieu of a clutch!) But I use purses for function, not fashion-- as beautiful as my purses are. I love my gold one, it’s coach! My mother has only ever had two purses, one black and one brown, and seems to get away with it.

Alh, that is an interesting question. I have no idea what is reasonable. Since I rarely part with shoes, I probably have 50 pairs. But 10 are sandals, 10 are boots, 6 are gym shoes, etc. If we were to live in an rv ( like my uncle did for the past 10 years) I could live with my top 5. But we have the room and I do wear them all. What is reasonable for shirts? Pants? Jeans? Dresses? I am down to 5 purses and 3 belts. Those are plenty for me.

Thanks, 1moremom! You are my hero for locating that song! :)

I’m late, but I’m in! I just put aside all of the holiday decorations to donate for the Christmas in July sale. I’m also going through my closet…I really don’t need 15 pairs of black slacks anymore! I’m also going to go through the summer dresses and only keep a handful that I really like.

Sorry…but the shoes and purses will have to wait :)

Speaking of late . . . one of our “display” areas still has last year’s Easter decorations in it. Now I am ahead for this year!

(Told you one bag a week would not be enough for us.)

I have teacher friends who take old (but in good shape)stuffed animals as well as any goofy little toy to use as rewards. You might like to look into that. That’s what happened to our beanie babies. I wish I lived close to someone getting rid of vintage china. I am so tired of my bridal china that is 30 some years old. I don’t use it often but I wish it were more classic looking.
Any ideas on what to do with old trophies?

Sometimes police and other agencies take stuffed animals (that are in good shape) as well. They used them to help soothe children. American Red Cross may also accept stuffed animals–not sure. Do know police sometimes have drives to collect stuffed animals for child witnesses and or victims

If you find out what to do with old trophies, maybe you can find out what to do with old swimming medals…and let me know.

We asked our kids what to do with the trophies, and these each wanted ONE (ahem…those soccer trophies looked exactly the same very year).

I also have to weed through my cookbooks. I don’t even use them anymore, but I’m having a bit of trouble parting with them!

As luck would have it, our town was having an electronics recycling event today, so I dropped off 3 old laptops (one was a Gateway, circa 1998), 2 of those big desk top printers, a DVD/VCR player, and a small boom box.

Yesterday, 4 bags of clothes and 3 old “wall hangings” (they’re too ugly to be called pictures) went to Goodwill.

This feels good.
