When we went to visit DD in Africa, I left all of my tropical climate clothes at the Peace Corps hostel before we left. We were heading to Brussels. (In December) so I didn’t need them. It gave me suitcase room for my Rwandan basket souvenirs!

I wouldn’t leave clothes in a hotel room, but I’m sure there is some way to donate clothes to others before you leave a country.

Yes, good idea, thumper. The key would be for a visitor to check into donating and not put it on the housekeeping staff to worry about dealing with your old clothes.

When I went abroad, by then end of our trip many clothes and items were not needed/wanted/able to travel back with us. Some members left their shoes or shoes behind in our hotel. This was in a foreign country. Not in America. I’d do it abroad, but I wouldn’t do it here. The housekeeping would have to find out what to do with it and such.

I’ve been researching the Bagster thing myself. Some people have a lot of issues with Waste Management picking it up either when they say they will or because of where the Bagster is placed. It’s an interesting concept and I may still try it.

I got rid of a bag of stuff from the cabinet under the kitchen sink. I was having the sink and garbage disposal replaced so I had to take everything out anyway. I tossed lots of stuff that was no longer good or that I clearly was never going to use again. I also tossed the kitchen sink…lol. But I got a new one so it was replaced.

busyparent when my mother traveled she would wear old clothes, especially underwear, and put them in the trash in the hotel. This was in the 70’s and she thought she was quite clever but no doubt added to the “Ugly American” reputation.

I know that when my son volunteered a lot for Habitat for Humanity, they had a shoe drive. Then, when they arrived in Mexico, distributed the shoes when they got there. My son was amazed to see that most of the people in the village regularly went without shoes, yet every road in that village and every floor in each home was all dirt. Not sure if this shoe drive was simply a one-time thing, or appropriate at each site, but I was inspired to donate my shoes with them.

Hi everyone - I’m pretty late to this party, but I’d like to jump on board. I really despise clutter, but I live with 3 other pack rats who get pretty mad if I de-clutter their stuff. It stresses me out to live with piles of papers , clothes on the floor, etc, but at least it is primarily confined to DH’s office & the DD’s rooms now. So for now, I’ll commit to cleaning out/organizing one small “public” area in our home per week.

As a side note, I finally bought new towels last week to replace the very worn out ones we had & threw those in to the going-to-charity pile. Can you guess what happened? The new towels are “too soft” and all of the worn out towels have been retrieved for daily use. Sigh…

I had great plans to finish off my master bathroom decluttering efforts today. But didn’t get home from our Houston trip til 5.30 a.m and slept most of the morning away and am just vegging out now. I know I need to get off my rear and do it, but I am really enjoying a lazy day… but it would feel good tp get it done …decisions decisions…

Well, this thread motivated me. Got up off my rear and did some work in the bathroom. Not sure I will finish it today, but progress for sure. My bag for the day (other than adding to the bathroom trash bag-in-progress) is a ziplock bag with all the loose coins I have found in the bathroom and bedroom so far. Going to take it to one of those coin machines at the grocery store and buy a starbucks gift card - for me (there is no fee if you get a gift card rather than cash and I do drink a lot of Starbucks). Found $17 so far and I know there is more.

cleaned the garage and have a pick up this Wednesday. Will say this is the first time H and I have cleaned it and not argued. That is because finally there just was not that much left. I have decided to let go of my antique pots I got in the 70’s.

I leave old clothes I no longer want in hotel rooms all the time - but they go in the trash so what’s for housekeeping to deal with?? They might not even know it’s clothes. They’re just emptying a trash can.

Pizzagirl, Just curious. If you were still wearing the clothes, they must have been still useable for someone else? What made you throw them away rather than donate them ?
