are you gonna be doing all your engineering stuff on it as well? because a lot of engineering programs can't be supported by laptops. you will need desktop or use school comp.

Lenovo is good, specially the one with the built in touch sensor. Sager would be better in my opinion: if you want to be future proof, and game along with your engineering. Sager is clevo based and is known for its great build. Sager is known by the techs and gamers, lenovo for the business minded. Some lenovos have gaming capability, but they dont really compare since thats not what they're e made for (thinkpads)

Dell business line models are quite good, especially the Dell Latitude series.

I'm eyeing the Dell Precision line myself. As for build quality and features, they approach the ThinkPads - and for me, since price is important, the great deals from the Dell Outlet are a big draw. The Elitebooks from HP seem nice, but tend to be more expensive. Not exactly sure if they are good value.

I think I'd check out Asus right about now. Newegg and Bestbuy have some good deals. Manufacturer's two warranty saves a few bucks. Fast cpu's, video, no junk pre-loaded and a good price.

Dude build a desktop...you can make one that is blazing fast for under $1000 and it's fully customizable.

I'm also a future Engineer major and was wondering if my computer really needed special capabilities, like won't most of the more intensive Engineering type calculations/programs/stuff be done in like a lab? And more specifically will a mac be alright for an Engineer because I kind of want to get one.

What specific models of thinkpads are you all suggesting? Are they mostly over 2000 dollars?

Don’t automatically rule out Macs. I’m a third year EE and I, and many of my classmates and professors, use Macs. I can dual-boot into Windows if I need it, but most programs either run on UNIX (and thus on Macs) or they’re too expensive/big for you to have on your own and you’ll need to go to a lab. I love my MPB to death, and can’t imagine life wihtout it now.

^Despite your success with them, there must be a reason why few engineers are recommending MBs.

I’m a MechE. and my thinkpad has always been able to run the engineering programs I have had to use. I’m not a big gamer so I can’t comment on that but, as for performance the thinkpad is great. I know other MechE’s that went to a macbook and then came back to the thinkpad. If you really want to be a MechE go for the thinkpad i right now have a T61, works great.
