Hey I am a high school senior going into MechE next year and I was just wondering what the best laptop would be for an engineering student. I don't care about price (will right now at least) or appeal, what laptop will get the job DONE!!!

I would recommend a thinkpad.

second the thinkpad. Also, if money is of no object, look into the possibility of a tablet as that can be very helpful for engineers.

What about a Lenovo ideapad (perhaps the Y430)?

I third the thinkpad. Sturdy, practical design. If price is no object, you should be able to get one with good enough stats to do pretty much anything.

I'd vote against the ideapad.

The main reason for getting a lenovo is the build quality and idepads aren't nearly on the level of thinkpads, they're the consumer level laptops.

Yeah, but the price is low, so for value/$ ?

OP has stated s/he does not care about price, so value/$ is irrelevant.

Is there any point of having a dual screen laptop for a engineering student?

I mean there is one thinkpad model that has that and it is pretty cool. Is there other good engineering laptops besides thinkpads...like a macbook/dell?

I'll 4th the ThinkPad. I'm an engineer and it works wonderfully for me.

Dells don't have the same level of quality, and unless you want to dual boot to run engineering software, don't get a Mac. Most people are just getting them because Apple's trendy, anyway. If you're one of those people, I would strongly advise against it.

Alright so I think I know the best laptop for college! Thanks guys!

I wouldn't get the dual screen laptop, mainly because it would be incredibly heavy and make it impractical for portability and it would be cheaper to just get a really nice monitor to hook a regular laptop up to that would be much bigger.

lol @ macbook

As for dell, srunni put it correctly; dells just don't have the same build quality. I think they are cheaper, but you said price wasn't an issue so...

So would Dells be the second best thing..there are other laptop companies that we are forgetting (Tobisha,Sony and HP). Just do throw those out there.

Dell's business line would be the second best. After that I think HP's business line would be third, but I would strongly encourage the thinkpad's they're just so much better than the rest.

What does a thinkpad do that makes it so "great"?

You can read what I said about them in another thread here: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1061657308-post6.html

How about a Macbook? Which is better? Thinkpad vs Macbook.

for engineering, thinkpad
