The Best Prep Schools

rahilfazelbhoy -- My suggestion to you is that you start your own thread. Go to the home page of Prep School Admissions, and then press the New Thread button. Put the names of your 3 schools are the title of your new thread. Then, ask your question in the message body.

Right now your question is buried in 3 separate threads and is off topic. If you have your own thread with the names of your schools in the title, you are far more likely to attract people who know your schools.

Exeter

Andover

Eton

Harrow

Deerfield

Hotchkiss

Andover
Exeter
St. Pauls
Choate
Deerfield
Hotchkiss
Groton

My top picks, in that order

Groton school is forever the best.

Peddie- gets overlooked in lists- has a gorgeous campus- very high AP scores- beautiful new swim facility, their own 18 hole golf course, and a top notch lacrosse program

@Kurt what is so special about Roxbury Latin? This is the first time I’ve heard of it and I’m very curious.
And what is BB&N?
being new to prep schools, I only know mostly about HADES and GLADSHEMES(?)

Any other schools with a good lacrosse program?

Robspit…did you apply? Look into it? I’m a Peddie advocate, so it’s nice to see someone else standing up for it!

what does GLADSHEMES stand for?

Roxbury Latin is officially a public (or quasi-public) school with very high academic standards, and selective admissions. I think it is free for qualifying students in Boston. It is comparable to Bronx Science or Stuyvesant in NYC. It is a very old and illustrious school.

^^^It is private, however, it has excellent financial aid and whether or not it touts itself as “need blind,” can probably afford to offer FA to any qualified candidate it really wants. Also, FYI, it’s all boys & a day school.

@preppossibly it’s GLADCHEMMS, which stands for:
Groton
Lawrenceville
Andover
Deerfield
Choate
Hotchkiss
Exeter
Middlesex
Milton
St. Pauls

this is the acronym a bunch of middle schoolers made up as the “top boarding schools” of the country. notice the lack of Loomis, Cate, Thatcher, Taft, Peddie, and other great boarding schools. The way that this user used it its fine, but some people use it as a guide to what schools are better than all the rest, and what schools they are going to apply to. it shouldn’t be used in this way because there is more to school hunting than applying to the schools with the lowest acceptance rates.

Thanks, PelicanDad - I always thought of it as quasi-public, since it has had such a diverse, urban student body. I know there was a lot of controversy years ago regarding affirmative action policies there. Am I confusing Roxbury Latin with Boston and/or Cambridge Latin?

Stagemum, I think you’re confusing Roxbury Latin (private, all-boys school), with Boston Latin (public, coed school.)

Boston Latin’s admissions policies were the subject of a lawsuit about a decade ago. [Racial policy lawsuit is ended - Baltimore Sun](<a href=“Racial policy lawsuit is ended; Boston schools won't take preference case to Supreme Court; Rights groups feared result”>Racial policy lawsuit is ended; Boston schools won't take preference case to Supreme Court; Rights groups feared result)

Boston Latin - public coed exam school - would be oldest school in coutry but they closed for a few years back in the 1600s

Roxbury Latin - private boys school - oldest school in the country; in continuouos existence since 1645

but there is Boston Latin School and Boston Latin Academy
BLS is higher regard than BLA
the Boston latin Periwinkle is talking about is BLS, and the Boston Latin the above poster is talking about is BLS also.

Thanks, everyone; I’m from Massachusetts originally, and really ought to know this.

Top Day Schools (non-boarding)

The Bishop’s School (La Jolla, CA)
-Suburban location, Lack of elitism (based on wealth), smaller classes, located on the beach. Water Polo powerhouse.

The Harker School (San Jose, CA)
-Same as The Bishop’s School really, but larger and includes a lower school

Francis Parker School (San Diego, CA)
-The graduation requirements are much more laid-back in comparison to The Bishop’s School. Located in central San Diego.

Bellarmine College Prep

Harvard-Westlake College Prep

The Collegiate School

These schools are located in California and my lack of knowledge of day schools outside of California hinders me from writing about them.

Top Boarding School

Philips Exeter Academy

Philips Andover Academy (these schools are counterparts - It’s hard to say one is better than the other without having a formal allegiance to one of them)

Lawrenceville

St. Paul’s School (It’s reputation kind of took a hit)

Not even close. The best girls school in the USA is Hockaday, in Dallas.

DISCLAIMER: This thread is highly subjective to personal tastes.

When “the best” begins to get involved, prospective students and parents should take these threads with a grain of salt.

what happened to st. paul’s to lower it’s reputation?
