Well, Massachusetts does have a tough winter, but I think it's part of the experience. I happen to like temperate climates, so it is the right area. Also, Mass. has Harvard, MIT, Tufts, BC, BU, Brandeis, Amherst, etc.

Best: California, Virginia, Pennsylvania
Worst: none, every state has its redeeming qualities

The best state is New York City (it might as well be its own state); the worst would be Idaho or Nebraska.

Best: Coastal states and those relatively close to coastal states
Worst: Everywhere else

From a NYer:

So, you think NY is a great place to study?

You'd Apply to NYU, Forhdham, Columbia... ALL in NYC.

Would you EVER think applying to a SUNY, like Binghamton or Oswego, as one of the best places to study in the country??

Of course, there are acceptions to the upstate issue like Syracuse, Ithaca and Cornell.. but even those towns are mostly dead. I've been to all three in the past month.

I would never ever want to study in California. Seems like I'm the loner on that one.

I don't really have a best place to study.

any midwestern states would be horrible to study in. just my opinion.

I dunno about studying, but Arizona is the best place ever. Its hot but not humid-aka perfect. I dont really want to study there though because i'll miss the snow. same for california. Snow is great as long as you dont have to drive.

Best:
California
Massachusetts

Worst:
Montana
Kentucky

worst is missippi and alabama.

From a parent's perspective...Hawaii has to be the worst...I can't imagine me ever doing ANY real studying there, and I sure won't credit my 2 kids with any more intestinal fortitude than me...lol!

For a theatre major I'd have to say the best are New York, California, Pennsylvania and Florida.

the worst are Alabama, Kentucky and Kansas...uhh maybe it would be better to just say "The South"

Funny how nobody is mentioning Alaska. It's as if it's a "given."

Best are California, New York, Illinois, North Carolina, and Massachusetts. These have the best top schools in the country.

While Massachusetts has long winters it does have most top 30 schools-Harvard,MIT,Tufts,Williams,Amherst,Wellesley,Holy Cross, Brandeis,Smith, and Mt. Holyoke. Tough to beat Stanford and Duke as elites and weather/social life.

A college campus can be an oasis that does not reflect the environment, people, politics, etc. of the state that it is located in.

I personally could never survive in NY state, DC or Georgia, but going to school in NYC, DC or Atlanta could provide a most incredible experience. On the other hand, schools in Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Montana, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas or the Dakotas would never turn me on, no matter how interesting they might be!

Best: California (San Diego)
[/quote]

I second that ;)

Everybody needs to back off Kentucky!

What did we ever do to you but give you cigarettes and hard liquor and horse racing?

Hawaii is a great place to visit, but you will get island fever FAST. And the colleges are all really horrible here. Our teachers are the most underpaid in the nation, which is funny because I don't know where all that extra money goes. Education isn't that important I guess....I mean, my high school fails the state wide assesment almost every year...But they just don't know why we're so behind

And I hate california...the weather pales in comparison to Hawaii, so I guess I am just too spoiled to be happy in Cali.

And you call me tough? :p
