We asked specifically, and adcom is by school region, because the adcoms get familiar with the schools they know/visit and present/review those applicants as part of their geographic cluster to the broader college admissions committee. BUT, family coming from under-represented region/state of residence will still be noticed.

@PelicanDad: Glad to see you back on the forum, and please feel free to contribute to this thread as a fellow parent along for “the college process ride”.

@PelicanDad: I’m thankful that I didn’t have the double whammy of two concurrent searches in one household. Did a very targeted BS search/apply process this year.

@rhapsody: I don’t know if you’ll get too much response to your question on the open forum…as parents may not want to post exactly where their kid is looking — or say anything that might jeopardize a kid’s chance at a given school. Also, are you Class of 2015? If not, I would not rush things…

I tried saying this over on the main college forum a few months ago and got flamed pretty badly by parents who are looking for financial ROI on their kids’ educations and who argued that only the rich can afford to attend college solely for the life of the mind. If that’s true, we’re doomed.

My favorite line: “It doesn’t matter that a bright young person can go to Ohio State, become a doctor, settle in Dayton, and make a very good living. Such an outcome is simply too horrible to contemplate.”

I also loved the line about Ohio State……because my D is applying to Ohio State as a pre-med (we live in Ohio), and that is the reaction she’s hearing from her boarding school crowd.

Her peers mostly seem to want to go in to finance and consulting. Back in my day, when you were out of work you said you were doing “consulting”!

Recently we visited with some relatives on my wife’s side…husband and wife both attended colleges well outside the HYP+M/S orbit and AMAZINGLY are both two very successful doctors (he’s a sought after speaker in his field) who seem to have the wherewithal to fill their beautiful Pittsburgh area home with Stickley furniture AND go on off-the-beaten path trips around the world with some frequency.

I know you all will require proof, but I am surrounded by successful people who graduated from one of the top party schools in the nation and are still able to live in nice homes, pay their bills, and eat in non-fast-food restaurants.
