^^^Hope it wasn’t the Michigan vs. Notre Dame game. :(( I’m ashamed of one of those schools…

^^not a good day yesterday for Michiganders of any stripe.

This vs. the iPhone 6 launch as today’s biggest news…discuss.

Other leading story: Baltimore Ravens fire Ray Rice for beating up his girlfriend-- reminds me of Harvard’s rescission of Owen Labrie (18) who “senior saluted” SPS girl (15).

Character matters.

The only “sport” I’m following today is the thread on NMSF score cutoffs…

@SevenDad – the Apple announcements win the title for biggest news in our house.

@sudsie: Did they announce them officially yet or is it still in speculation mode?

@Seven, starting on 10-Sept, you can call NM Corp directly and ask for individual confirmation. From the crowd-sourcing returns on the NMSF thread, it appears this year’s cutoffs are quite a bit lower than last year’s.

I’m following the weather. It’s a solid topic with more impact than rankings and cutoffs – outside CC, of course. ;)

@gmt: Thanks for clarification. I had forgotten about that test/cutoff until Sudsie mentioned it. I’ll skip the calling in and wait to hear from 7D1.

…and of course Boarding School cutoff scores are equal to the highest score in their region… which no one has quite figured out yet.

For many families whose kids are aiming for schools that don’t give nat’l merit scholarships, it’s not the most important thing in the world. However, in some cases it really matters–D1 has a 4 year full tuition scholarship thanks to being a finalist–which is what saved enough money for me to afford BS for D2 :).

For any of you who may have Tufts applicants in this cycle, they just sent their most recent stats out in an email to alumni: They enrolled 1,325 new freshman chosen from 19,074 applicants for an acceptance rate of 17%. The engineering school’s acceptance rate was a record-low of 14% (down from 20% one year ago). 34% of the incoming engineers are female. Overall, 42% of incoming students received FA, 12% are first generation. Foreign students make up 7% of the class. 30% are students of color and this is also the university’s most economically diverse class to date (most Pell grants too). 65 merit scholars, 69 valedictorians and 53 salutatorians. Mean SAT reading score is 714, a new record. The mean for both math and writing SAT scores was a 720. So crank up those scattergrams! I will be crying quietly into my cold coffee here at work.

Speaking of the Jumbos, 7D1 just got an engineering brochure from Tufts. But going back to my point (I think I made it here), it’s probably too little too late/waste of postage and paper. Aren’t kids are supposed to be FINALIZING college lists right now, not throwing new things into the mix?

My dd is class of 2016 but aren’t seniors picking ED schools off of their list about now? I think the plan is to hook 'em early and hold their interest all the way until acceptance letters go out. :-bd

Last Friday, we received the an update from the CC office. Seminars were held with seniors last week to go over:

More seminars will be held the last week of September to discuss:

The update also included a student to-do list:

ChoatieKid says they are being ridden hard to make sure they are on top of things.

Pretty sure at SAS, the prelim lists were already due…at least if the movement from my D’s “Colleges I’m Considering” to “Colleges I’m Applying To” pages in Naviance is any indication.

We are trying to finalize our EA plan. While discussing this, the possibility of one more safety school came up. We might add it, not sure. We just thought that in the event that her safety schools are what she has to choose from, she just might want a little more choice. We have visited every school on our list, do you think it is necessary to visit the additional safety as well? I think we are all pretty “done” with visits!

We visited the safety school-- S1 declared it just fine (it didn’t hurt to have shelled out big bucks for 50 yard line football tix when we visited the school). Gives peace of mind to know in advance that if the reach & match schools don’t work out, he will be OK w the safety.

@GMT but did you have 2 other safeties on the list that you had visited? This safety is a very large University a plane trip away. We thought we would visit in the Spring but are worried about demonstrated interest. They do not have a rep visit D’s BS so the only contact was online and requesting info. Common Data Set does say they consider interest.

S1 might add one additional safety, but he’ll likely visit the school on his own.
