I am a true canadian who will attend University of Toronto next year, i have read the other thread and i can say most things they say are very contradictory and yet very true!
yes, grade inflation and deflation exist within our system, some schools may have 20% of its students getting over 90% avgs, while another keeps 90% of its students under 80%, however, it'll all balance out, at U of T first year science, 30% fail!!, a friend of mine just finished 1st year in biology, she went in with 88% avg(which means her grades were inflated), and came out of first year with 1.9GPA.
now on the other side, her boyfriend, from a different school with 80% avg, entered the same program and came out with a 3.7 for the first year

and I think that while Canadian schools can't match the Ivies (maybe Cornell=UoT,Queens) but UofT is as good as many other top 30 schools, b/c while it is easy to gain admission, UofT fails many of the first years, and only about 20-40% of its students actually graduate!! so... it all balances out
