The City of Pittsburgh

I visited Pittsburgh a few weeks ago and I really liked the city, however a lot of people are telling me that "the city sucks." Looking for some other opinions.

Go with your gut. Some people love Pittsburgh, others hate it. If you really liked it, trust that instinct. Did these skeptics have any concrete evidence to back up their claims?

Not really, they cite what they have heard.

I like Pittsburgh. It is a fairly small, clean and safe city with many of the big city amenities. Neighborhoods are important and people are friendly. There are lots of dining and shopping options. There are professional sports, top notch performing arts, museums and parks, all coupled with good public transportation that lets you get places without a car. I guess you just have to decide for yourself! :)

PS - The steel mills are all long-gone and Pittsburgh isn't the smokey city anymore. Just curious, do your friends think Pittsburgh is too small or too large?

^^^i agree with lkf725 (Pittsburgh is like my second home :p)

My daughter is very happy with Pittsburgh, the city. She grew up in Manhattan, so she's used to having everything close by. Pittsburgh isn't NYC, of course, but in a way it's better that Pittsburgh is smaller. It's easier to get around, and everything is more accessible. Today she told me she was in two museums for classes: The Carnegie Museum and the Warhol. She studies in a beautiful city library that's right by the Pitt campus. All the Pitt kids (and the CMU kids too, I think) ride all the buses for free, so you can go anywhere, even to the airport, easily. She attended a musical at the Benedum Theater, and she's gone ice skating in Schenley Park. She and her friends go to the movies at Southside. There's plenty to see and do. Give Pittsburgh a chance.

There is a lot of beauty on the Pitt/CMU campuses architecturally and beautiful Schenley park is nearby. South Oakland is the cultural centerpiece of Pittsburgh. I haven't met anyone that has gone to Pitt who didn't love Pittsburgh, it's a great city and very charming.

I am confident that whoever said 'Pittsburgh Sucks' isn't from Pittsburgh or only has a superficial impression of it.

Is it true about how much it rains and how depressing it is in winter? I'm going to visit Pitt in May.

No, I wouldn't say there is an abundance of rain here. What we do have is cloudy, gray days in winter. Pittsburgh is on the eastern end of the midwest and western end of the east so we have 4 distinct seasons. Winter is gray, cloudy, with several VERY cold days and lots of days between 20 and 30. Spring is gorgeous since there are plenty of trees and flowers around, though it is not always warm, of course. For instance, at large suburban malls there are still piles of snow which are slowly receding. Summer is generally relatively mild, temps in the hi 70's to hi 80s, with a week in the 90s just for fun. I have lived here for many years now and have seen it at 100 (officially) only once. Fall is my favorite season here since the trees really are gorgeous against their hillsides. Farm stands still abound in the small neighborhoods.

In many ways, Pittsburgh really is a small town, with big city amenities, and plenty of those. If you love pro football, there is no city like it in the world. This town literally lives and dies by the Steelers. When they won the Superbowl, all schools and most businesses were closed when 1 million people flooded the downtown area.

Thanks for the info! Sounds a lot like my hometown in Potomac, Maryland right near D.C. Our winters are freezing but our falls and summers are amazing. I don't think weather will be a problem :)
