So what are people's thoughts on college fairs? Are they worth attending? In my opinion, it's a huge waste of time. You'll pick up the same brochure literature that you have probably already received in the mail, learn generic information that could easily be found on the internet, attempt in vain to make a good impression with admissions officers, and spend half of the time filling out information cards! Why not just do some good research, and then actually visit the schools you're interested in??

Thoughts? Tips for making the most of the college fair experience?

IMO a college fair is a good way for a student who cannot visit a school to take an action to show a demonstrated interest in a college. If you have the good fortune to be able to visit all of the schools you or your child are interested in, then I don’t think it is necessary or even particularly useful to go to a college fair. They are generally very crowded and you only will get a few minutes with most admissions officers. Still, for some people it is the best option available.

I agree with happy. Even if you CAN visit the school, it’s still a good way to make a personal connection with the admissions rep, who has a good chance of being the actual admissions officer for your region, and the person who will be doing the first read of your application.

yes… if you look at some schools you may not be familiar with. skip the crowded booths and look at the less known schools they may be hidden gems.

I forced my shy D to go to a college fair in our town. We worked on questions she could ask at each booth, and I stood back and had her approach each college booth by herself. She was not thrilled beforehand, but it turned out that she did okay. And afterwards we headed to a fast food place and went over all the info from the fair. We had fun decompressing and sorting through the college possibilities.

I recommend students “practice” at college fairs, and pick an easy first college visit that is not your top choice.
