The essay....

I'm unfamiliar with the college application process and was wondering how to make myself stand out in my essay? Anyone have any tips or suggestions? Can you really write about whatever you want?

my guidance counselor basically told me that it’s your time to shine. yes, you can write about anything if that’s what the application requests, but be careful not to complain or if you do, talk about how you overcame that specific obstacle. also, just from what i’ve been hearing, try to write about something the administrative office has probably not seen before. for example, i saw someone write for the question “what was your biggest accomplishment” and they wrote about failing algebra and got a complete scholarship to an ivy. try to keep it unique and interesting! think about your past hobbies or a certain event in your life that really had an impact on you! good luck!

My opinion is that it’s the only chance you have to bring life to an app. It certainly can’t raise the dead, so to speak, but it can animate an otherwise lifeless list of extracurricular and academic interests. My opinion is that it’s best structured as a narrative

Okay, but should I focus on one aspect of my life that I feel is most important? Or is it better to tell “the whole story” so to speak?
