The Eternal Struggle: William and Mary vs. UVA

prep·py or prep·pie (prp)
n. pl. prep·pies Informal

  1. A student or former student of a preparatory school.
  2. A person whose manner and dress are deemed typical of traditional preparatory schools.
    adj. prep·pi·er, prep·pi·est
Of or relating to a preppy or a preparatory school.

I think it denotes a very homogeneous culture, a certain level of superficiality, and a certain level of affluence.

I love UVA as a school, I toured it when class was out, and it was amazing, which is why this is such a tough decision. My only worry is that the student body will be “preppy” for lack of a better word. And that I won’t really feel at home in that.

Lawsco… I’m actually starting to feel UVA may be better for you. It is lmuch, much larger, and therefore your opportunity to meet like minded students (let’s just use as an example … straight edgers) would be much greater.

Straight edgers hahaha. I lol’d wipes eyes.

Yeah, I’ve definitely sensed that vibe. That perhaps at UVA, because its so big (comparatively) and relatively diverse, I would be able to get past the very vocal and prevalent prep/frat image and find a fair amount of similar individuals. I’ve been looking at all the different clubs and its been fairly comforting. I’ve also talked to some people on facebook that I seem to get along with.

On a side note, if anyone has some insight on class sizes, number of TA’s you have to work with, and exposure to professors at UVa, that would be great.

W&M for sure! UVA lacks diversity & progressiveness!

From what you’ve said I’d feel that W&M may be better for you. Despite being smaller, W&M still has plenty of diversity and people from all backgrounds who are interested in all types of things! As a fellow history buff and a current W&M student, Williamsburg is an amazing place to explore - I especially like jogging through during the evening! W&M also places lots of importance on academics. The frats are there if that’s your thing, or even for just the occasional visit, but the opportunity to do research with professors is just unbelievable! I’m only a freshman but I’ve gotten the chance to get to know a few professors quite well, and go to one’s home for a cookout! I’ll also be spending this summer doing research at one of the institutes here on campus!

W&M is being a little misrepresented here. It’s medium sized, with an enrollment of 8000, and has Division I athletics. all 8000 of those kids can’t be nerds. i have no connection to either school, and from an objective standpoint, UVA only has 2 advantages: a better ranking(23 versus 32) and a bigger alumni base. otherwise, I’d rather live and study at W&M than UVA.

Congrats on getting in at both!

you should think hard about this choice and take everything into consideration
