The Fun Starts Again! College Football at the Top Colleges

Think those 93,607 fans at the LA Coliseum had a good time before/during/after USC’s rout of Ohio State!!? Congrats to USC. You may proceed directly to GO, aka the National Championship Game. Your biggest stumbling block might be that rematch with Stanford on November 15 in Palo Alto.

In the SAT Bowl held in Nashville, Vanderbilt continued its strong start to the season with a fabulous tailgate scene for 37,370 who feasted on a win over Rice. Congrats to the Commodores and enjoy it now because much tougher opponents lie ahead.

The Ivies start play this week. Enjoy the parties, the fun and the excitement!

Stop with the SAT bowl nonsense--Vandy and Rice both have solid programs.

Funny how Hawkette likes to look at the top 30 schools when it comes to football but only goes looking to the top 25 for anything academically related. Could it be that Michigan is rated number 26 now in USNWR and is playing lousy football this year?

Clearly, Mr. Novi, clearly.

Oregon Ducks are the team to watch!!!!
they are going to destroy boise state this weekend!!
im pumped to watch it

rjko,
LOL. The college football thread is a duplicate of one that I did last year. Same schools as last year.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-search-selection/389224-athletic-life-college-football-scene.html

I believe strongly that, in the course of doing a college search, a student should fully consider the complete undergraduate experience both inside and outside of the classroom. While this year's U Michigan team looks weak on the field, the crowds continue to show up for the games and, if you've followed my posts about this subject, I personally think that the fun environment and how this impacts the campus and its social life is every bit as important as the results of the team. Furthermore, I think that the larger athletic scenes often create positive ties between the college students/alumni that will extend many decades into the future and perpetuate the psychic connection. For some students, this can be an important differentiator in comparing the undergraduate experience at different colleges.

As for the other threads and the limitation to 25 schools, blame it on USNWR and their pathetic online presentation. They provide 25 schools on a page and getting more than that is arduous. But don't let that stop you from adding to the threads. So please do the work yourself on U Michigan or any other college and add it you think it will help the comparisons and the discussions.

Sure hawkette. Whatever you say.

^ Peer Assessment, rjk, peer assessment...;)

Columbia, the 1929 Rose Bowl Champions (take that, Stanford!!) will rise again, or will rise eventually.

Peer Assessment = Coaches' poll, which of course has no credibility on CC.

I was one of those 93,000+ and yes, I did have a great time before, during and after the game. There really is nothing like the tailgate scene before a game. Campus was full of people by 10am and you couldn't park after noon.

I have to give USC credit. They always play at least one top team prior to the PAC 10 schedule, plus ND every year. TOSU was exposed, once again, against a quicker and better coached team. This will happen more frequently now for the Buckeyes because finally they are choosing to play a decent team before the Big 10 conference.

Columbia won the 1934 Rose Bowl, not 1929. However, it was over Stanford.

Columbia Bowl History

Columbia has the lowest winning % of any school in Division I history that has played at least 1,000 games.

dOSU has plenty of team speed (look at the no. of their skill players starting in the NFL), except for their current crop of wideouts.

Tressel has just been too in love w/ his vanilla "Tresell ball" offense - nowadays, the O has to score a lot of points to be the best of the best.

Maybe Tressel has finally awaken to that fact since he pretty much played Pryor for the entire game against Troy (sorry, but Boeckman is just not a big-time QB).

The headline says it all,

“Vandy football ranked in the Top 25 for the first time in 24 years”

I can only guess at the vibe on the Vanderbilt campus and all of the fun and the parties and the anticipation of the next game. Congratulations to the Commodore fans. It’s been a long time coming.

There is other terrific football news for colleges ranked in the USNWR Top 30. In addition to Vanderbilt, there are three others in the Bowl Division that are also undefeated-USC, Northwestern, and Wake Forest. If this goes on for a few more weeks, look for all of these colleges (and maybe a few others in the USNWR Top 30) to go to bowl games. Who said great athletics can’t co-exist with great academics?

The Ivies got going this weekend and Harvard again broke tradition with its first-ever Friday night football game. A good crowd of 20,462 attended and enjoyed the Crimson’s win. Anybody else think we’ll see a greater investment going forward by Ivy colleges in the athletic/social life for their undergraduate students?

A "greater investment"? What do you mean by that? Investment in college football? I doubt it.

Who said great athletics can’t co-exist with great academics?

[/quote]

I think you need to get off your SAT Bowl high horse, because while these athletes represent their 'SAT Bowl' playing universities, these are, for the most part, people who would not have gotten into their respective schools otherwise...

Yet I'm pretty sure those schools that focus on academics much more don't spend nearly as much money on scholarships and their athletics programs...

Well if you're talking Ivies, then yeah, because they dont give athletic scholarships.

Regardless, what's your point?

UCB,
I think that change is coming to the Ivies, perhaps not universally, but I see Harvard taking steps to improve their programs and their profile and, if attendance is any guide, students and the Harvard community are responding positively. I mean, why should students at Cal or Stanford have all the fun?? :)

TUOwls,
True that some of these student athletes got preferential admissions treatment. Equally true is that the Ivies are full of student athletes who got in due to their athletic abilities. Are you down on them too? The athletes at Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, Rice, Vanderbilt, Notre Dame compete at the highest collegiate level in games that have national consequences and yet most of these programs still graduate their students at rates nearly equal to the rest of the student body.
