The gap widens between enrollment and financing of financial aid

"Complaints about the increase in university tuition are nothing new. But talk to high school counselors, college students or their parents, and you will hear a repeated saying often: as enrollment increases and income stagnates, filling the gap between the two is becoming increasingly difficult.

That is one reason why Lydia Muse lives at home in Fort Collins, Colorado, instead of finishing her second year at the Rhode Island School of Design. He is taking a year off to work in a part-time retail business and do missionary work with his church while his mother, Brandy Muse, discovers how to pay a second year.

For her daughter’s first year, Brandy Muse hastened to pay the tuition. RISD, as the school is known, gave Lydia a financial aid package totaling about $ 52,000. But that still left a deficit of approximately $ 18,000, even though the federal financial aid formula determined that the Muse family would not need to contribute anything." …

This is a terribly written article, riddled with mistakes.

Edited: it is just atrociously written. Who the heck decided to publish that without editing. They actually refer to need-blind schools as “schools for the blind”… wha??

If you want to complain directly to the author, he apparently has an account here @choiceauthor , based on these threads:
http://talk.qa.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/2170258-were-you-gapped-in-financial-aid-by-your-college.html

I’m already confused by:

“…as enrollment increases and income stagnates, filling the gap between the two is becoming increasingly difficult.”

What’s the correct interpretation of this passage?

It’s unfortunate the author didn’t speak with some of the knowledgeable posters who posted on his threads. He wasn’t active responding on his threads either.

I wonder if some of the language issues are due to the website In the OP that published what seems like a translation. I would compare it with the original published by NY Times, but can’t because it’s behind a paywall…Thereby ensuring that people who would most benefit from better understanding this issue never see it.
