I can’t say 100% for sure for the US schools…but, I believe they made a special allowance due to covid. BTW… The other idea in instead of going post-grad…just redo grade 12.
The other reason we chose to apply as a repeat Jr. is that after asking, one school (the one she is going to attend) said that even though you can apply as a 12th grader, they hadn’t accepted any the previous year, the other 2 schools said they had a couple, but all three typically accepted about 25 for 11th.
We made the same mistake … applying to 5 schools and grateful to have gotten off the waitlist.
If every thread could start with the words “Cast a WIDE net” the waitlist post would ‘hopefully’ have less posts
Anyone want to speculate on how long Covid will overshadow BS sports? If someone is entering this year, will sports be next to normal by senior year? Or are we looking at decade long drag? And in college sports? Note no judgement in the question. Kids all around have had a rough time year, I certainly don’t begrudge a PG year to serious athletes and students.
Do you mean BS not having a regular season or do you mean kids reclassing because they can’t get recruited by colleges because there’s a glut of athletes?
The college glut issue will last down into 2023. 2024 is the year that should ease. It’s not a ten year issue.
My son’s boarding school is having a modified season right now, and it’s one of the stricter, bubbled schools with regard to COVID. I expect Fall will be normal (with masks). The school is offering vaccines next week to any student over 16. Next fall I expect all who qualify for a vaccine will have gotten one.
No season means zero chance of visibility. For most sports, there are showcases where graduating students attend and scouts from the colleges can attend. Those were all cancelled (or almost all). The glut issue may not be a ten-year issue but, it has harmed a certain age group more than others. Not every school is handling it the same. Some schools are “discretely” trying to shepherd these potential post-grads out the door as I am typing this.
Same with us.
I am wondering if BS will follow colleges and make vaccination mandatory.
Until the vaccines are approved for under age 16 it will be hard for them to make it mandatory for the whole student population. That said, at the revisit days they were messaging that they were strongly encouraging and helping facilitate the 16+ age group to get the vaccine. In PA, people who live in “group housing” situations were a higher priority category and BS would fall into that group.
All evidence points to Pfizer being approved for 12+ by the summer, that’s why I was wondering if BS were going to mandate vaccination for next school year.
Given how strict Hotchkiss is, I would be shocked if they don’t require it.
I have to say that I am fully in favor of requiring vaccination if only to make BS return mostly to normal. I do not care about having the kids wear masks but I want sports back in full season and I want kids to be able to participate in out of school activities. If they restrict sports in the fall I do not know what I will do but I do know my head will explode.
Definitely will be some conflict if they require all of the students to be vaccinated against COVID-19, especially as the schools did not say during the decision process that they would mandate it if approved for teenagers. I suspect the schools will mandate testing but not vaccination. Given the newness of the MRNA technology and the very limited risk to teens from COVID, not to mention the current concerns over the AZ and J&J vaccines, the risk/benefit does not favor vaccinating teens, IMHO.
I would just point out there is no way the schools could take a position on vaccinating prior to April 10. They did not have all the facts and still don’t. I expect things will become clearer over time.
They mandate flu shots and other vaccinations because things spread so easily in small group living setting, I would support them mandating covid vax too. I am sure the teachers and staff would feel safer as well and things could really be closer to normal. Plenty of people on the waiting lists, I am sure schools could refund and fill spot for any families uncomfortable with vax who don’t want to study remotely.
Yes. Being approved by CDC/FDA for 12+ does not remove all these concerns. J&J vaccine was approved and then recalled.
J&J has not been “recalled”. There has been a “pause”, whatever that means. Believe me - I am paying attention since that’s the one I received. In consulting with docs, it seems like a very rare potential side effect and the CDC is erring on the side of caution and transparency, understanding the panic the info will cause. The clotting condition happens to one in 4-12 million of the general population per year, regardless of the vax. Here, there are 6. (Weird they are all 16-42 females, so all the more reason to look into it). Mainly the concern is that the normal treatment for clotting (heparin) is dangerous for treating this condition and while they are figuring it out, they wanted to educate the care providers so they know to ask about vaccine history before prescribing heparin for a blood clot. I am not crazy about this info, but it isn’t shocking.
There was a quality control issue for a shipment a week or two ago that made them toss the whole thing, but that wasn’t a recall - it never made it to market.
I wouldn’t be rushing out to get kiddo the J&J vaccine, but Pfizer so far seems ok and the side effect profile seems solid. Moderna too, but I know less about that one. Generally speaking, side effects for vaccines appear in the short term, not long term, by their nature. I am comfortable with it for 16+, and if the studies support it is ok for young’uns, I would be ok with it too. Given the trade offs.
My kid shouldn’t have to get a vaccine approved for emergency use only to make “teachers and staff feel safer”. If they do not “feel safe” (God I despise that phrase), they themselves can be vaccinated and thus significantly decrease their chances of dying or becoming seriously ill from Covid.
Schools already mandate a whole slew of vaccinations. This one isn’t going to be any different. My best guess is vaccine is mandated in the next two years.
The risk of blood clot from J&J is laughable compared to the risk of blood clot from medication that so very many women take on a regular basis.
