Their school, their rules.
Just looking at some college athletic camps which may be available this summerâŠsome Ivy League schools require proof of vaccination for camp registration. Thatâs where we are headed. Get comfortable with that, or start looking for different options.
@PaDadOf2
I was wondering the same thing. Or hoping/assuming that camps would go ahead full steam and require proof of vax. Glad you are finding that to be the case. We want camps
Their school, their rules.
If thatâs true, I am guessing, then the same goes with the admission/WL/etc rules
Athletes or otherwiseâŠ
âRun, Forrest, Run!â
I feel like schools are very careful to make clear that the situation is ever changing and nothing is set in stone. Everything we have heard is âthis is what we are planning butâŠâ âwe evaluating the situationâŠâ etc. Has your school actually said they will not?
Donât schools require all kids of vaccines? I am pretty sure all of ours require flu shots every year. I donât see how this is any different.
This! Didnât mean to make the same point.
This is what I am seeing too. The pause, despite the media making it big news, is not about questioning the safety, but to ensure proper recommendations. In a way it is no different than the allergy issue. They paused, took a look, and now recommended that anyone with an allergy history is observed for 30 minutes instead of 15.
Itâs different. Those other vaccines (flu and otherwise) have been around for decades and went through years of trials and evaluations before being fully approved, especially for children. The vaccines to prevent COVID arenât even fully approved for adults; they are all under FDA emergency use authorization.
Getting the kids vaccinated is not simply about keeping them or teachers safe from COVID, it is to stop transmission. The virus mutates as it spreads and can turn into a deadlier version of itself, or one that the vaccine cannot prevent.
Thisâs a fascinating field to get a degree inâŠ
Am I reading that right that blood clots can happen with all vaccines and should be a calculated risk? How about getting it covered by life insuranceâŠ
The guys is from the UCL but stillâŠ
âIf you look at those reports of blood clots with thrombocytopenia for those other vaccines and then compare them to the background rate we would expect to see, they are not raised,â Peter Arlett, the European Medicines Agencyâs head of pharmacovigilance, said at an April 7 press conference.
He gave somewhat mismatched figures â cases of clots worldwide, along with the number of people who received vaccine only in Europe. Still, he said there were 35 cases of serious blood clots with the vaccine made by Pfizer/BioNTech among 54 million doses given; five cases with the Moderna vaccine among 4 million Europeans dosed; and three cases, later updated to four, of blood clots with low platelet counts among 4.5 million people doses â apparently worldwide â with the vaccine developed by Johnson & Johnson. That is the number the U.S. appears to have updated to six cases out of 6.8 million doses.
By contrast, he said, there were 169 cases of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, and another 53 similar clots in a blood vessel draining the abdomen, among 34 million people
Kiddoâs BS is hosting a âFall Return to Campusâ webinar next week. Iâm terrified to hear the expectations they have for the Fall. Iâm ready for normal again and my head will also likely explode if the school still feels like we will be far off normal.
Do BSs really mandate the flu shot? Kiddoâs does not, but they do encourage it and make it available on campus. I suspect they will do the same with the covid vaccine.
At least at kiddoâs school, the faculty, staff and admin are already 90% vaxed. So âteacher safetyâ is a non issue.
The news we have gotten from the school is that, barring any new hiccups, they are planning relatively normal on boarding and fall programming. They are strongly encouraging and facilitating vaccination, expecting students to be vaccinated this summer, if not sooner. Mandating, though? I havenât heard that.
Kids have pre-existing conditions (asthma, diabetes, etc). The variants seem to impact children more than the original. Vaccinations make the school run more smoothly (no more swabs), and allows the students much more freedom. Vaccines prevent spread - to more than just teachers. To the entire community at large. The risk profile seems good. Until I hear more to the contrary, those are enough reasons for me to get kiddo vaccinated. YMMV.
Some schools have already started restricting sports visits. IF you want to see the participants, you must be vaccinated or show proof of a Covid test within the last 48 hours.
I think itâs likely to be strongly encouraged by Sept for all students but there will be some who donât want to take the vaccine.
Covid tests are only as good as the moment you took them.
Schools are going to have a hard time maneuvering this oneâŠespecially international students.
MA decided to make Flu shots mandatory this year but then walked back when it was clear Flu wasnât going to be a big deal because of the already in place covid protocols. So, yes, for a while ALL MA schools required a Flu shot.
Yes, I see obvious issues with this stance.
Yes, and there was some group which also sued the state regarding the mandated flu shots. So they never got to the deadline. There are lots of strident folks when it comes to vaccines.
Whatever happens, it will be interesting to see if itâs universal or rules vary by state/school.
I thought the law was fairly settled about vaccine requirements though, I doubt they would have won in court. As in vaccine requirements were long ago upheld by the Supreme Court.
I just managed to enroll SweetBoy in the last possible sleep away camp spot on Earth and the health survey was allready updated to include Covid vax and required me to explain why he wasnât vaccinated yet. He is too young right now. But our pediatrician said there is a good chance he can be vaxâd before the start of school. I personally hope, and expect, the vaccine will be required next year.
Even if the boarding schools want to require COVID vaccination to attend next school year, itâs an open question if thereâs time. August is not very far away, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require two doses for full effectiveness and healthy teens will not get priority from the authorities even if one or more are approved for them.
