The Grandparent Thread

Almost 9 month old granddaughter just started crawling and got her first tooth. What an eventful week for her.

He’s here! All 8 pounds 10 ounces, born on 8/10/18.
Long labor, complicated delivery, distressed baby, transfer to external NICU.
But all are stable.

Hope all is ok, @mominva

Sending hugs and good thoughts to all, @mominva

@mominva - Congratulations! Wow! He is a big boy! Best wishes to your D and all your family. Hoping for a speedy reunion, though I am going to say that the doctors in GS’s hospital were VERY conservative. GS spent some time in the NICU, but it was in the same hospital. ((HUGS))

@2VU0609 - Oh, that must have been the best three minutes ever! Snuggling is so much fun!

@shellfell - It’s funny how that happens. Enjoy!

D and SIL’s financial advisor had them use Utah’s 529 plan. We do not live in Utah.

D and SIL did find out they were having a boy and had a nice dinner with SIL’s parents, H, and me to tell us. D and SIL each had a favorite name. GS was not named either.

Congrats, mominva. Hoping the mom and baby recover soon.

Congratulations @mominva! Sorry to hear about the complications but hope everyone is recovering and home soon.

@mominva Thinking of you and hoping all is well.

The NICU nurses will think of that 8 pound 10 ounce baby as an Amazon. They’re used to the ones weighing less than three pounds!

Mom and baby update:
Thank you all for the good wishes.
Mom was transferred to the same hospital as baby about 15 hours after delivery. She has started pumping for breast milk production and is meeting increasing success.
Baby boy is having a special cooling process to protect his brain; once he is warmed to normal on Monday he will get to do his skin to skin and first breast feeding.
I am delighted to be included in rounds: all the caregivers are welcoming and direct. The little guy is doing all the things newborns are expected to do (except feeding), and none of the concerning things they are monitoring for.

I want some cuddle time with this guy so I am considering extending my trip. I do not want to intrude on the other grandmother’s time but, as the family medical person, I would love to go to the first follow-up visits…

Thanks for the update, @mominva. The NICU nurses and physicians are taking good care of your sweet GS, but nothing will be better for baby boy and mama than skin to skin and first breastfeeding.

I hope you will be able to extend your trip. Your experience and knowledge will be very helpful going forward. And cuddle time is the best! Hopefully the other grandmother will understand. I am the local grandmother for our GS and I totally respect that when the other grandparents are in town, time with GS is all theirs.

Often airlines will refund change fee if it is due to medical issues and there us note from MD. You may wish to consider this. Your grandchild’s Nicu sounds like sonething they may refund for.

DIL’s ultrasound is tomorrow and they will be telling us the sex! First grandchild on both sides, so no real preference. Can’t wait!

While SIL was at Army Reserves over the weekend, DD and GD visited. GD is already 3 months old and DD didn’t bring the activity mat. I went out and got some toys that were 0+ (a great little turtle with a mirror on its belly, rattle in one foot, crinkly material on another - it hangs from a clip and turns out to be GD’s favorite toy); another is rings with different patterns/textures. A few others. I had Discovery ball when the girls were little - a gift from a friend - it has textures around it and when you squeeze it and have the hole open towards the baby, she gets a squirt of air which is intriguing to her. GD is very active and interested in being active. She rolls and wants to crawl. She babbles as I try to teach her Mama and Nana. She knows her name and smiles when I am talking to her.

DD says in the last week GD is really growing.

A friend is grandma to twins - a boy and a girl that were both really good sized for twins. They are now 6 months and I think she said they were like 19 lbs each.

Exciting times…

@mominva, hope you’re hearing good news every day.

@SOSConcern, I saved several toys from when my kids were little, too (more than I should have). It’s fun to see my grandsons loving them. The 11 month-old loves the Little Tikes nesting farm animal set and the 2 1/2 year old loves an old Fisher Price mailbox set.

@frazzled1 I just got a few more toys at WalMart today - a few for right now, a few for a little down the road. Melissa and Doug; a line I had not seen before but looking good, Spark, Create, Imaginate.

One of the things DDs really loved was a grocery check out - hand held scanner, a little check out area, cash machine with drawer for money and the drawer would click open…one of those things that was inexpensive. I had no idea how much fun they would have with it.

Just got a $20 Kid Connection (for age 2+) cleaning cart with all the little things - over 20 items in a little shopping cart type of holder…I know that will get played with a lot.

I know these are things that the parents really are not looking at, but are really good toys for GD.

I saved quite a few of their toys too. Some things went to grand-nieces and nephew already.

S2 and DIL just announced they are expecting their first in February! This will be grandbaby #3 for us. Very exciting!!!

Found out today that S and DIL are having a GIRL! Super happy–everything looked good on the ultrasound. My two nieces are due around the same time–both having boys. Can’t wait to buy something pink.

I saw on a license plate today “7 Grandkids”. It was a convertible Mustang. A real go-go grandma.

Baby updates: mine and my daughters
Daughter was discharged today with all the appropriate wound care and follow up instructions. She went over to the NICU to set up camp for the night.
Grandson finished the cooling protective procedure and warmed easily. He was allowed to begin feeds and is slowly getting the hang of things. MRI was done today, showing a small blip in a non-significant area. Since he was making good progress and the neurology team processed MRI results today, he was also discharged!!!

DD asked if I would extend my stay, so I did. Gotta love Southwest - cost me $21
