Change of plans, hospital is evidently super busy and told DIL not to come in. She was supposed to go in last night, postponed til this morning and now might not be til afternoon.
@tx5athome That is not unusual for an induction or cervical ripening to be delayed if L&D is busy. Hopefully she gets in today.
My daughter was pregnant when they moved to their current city in January. Picked a group a coworker used since she didn’t know anything about any of the local groups, and liked this hospital. Long story short, she wasn’t happy with the care she was receiving by the OB she had selected, so made a change within the group at 34 weeks. Saw the new OB today and it sounds like this is a much better fit; more traditional and follows the ACOG guideline, something the previous doctor did not. I am sorry she didn’t make the switch earlier, but no harm done.
Babysitting granddaughter six months old on Saturday. I’m so excited!
I’d guess that the OB docs want to get as many babies delivered as possible before the holiday weekend! ?
New to being a future grandparent in September. Any books on grandparenting that you like or found particularly useful?
I enjoyed Lesley Stahl’s Becoming Grandma.
But as a Pediatric Nurse, I was looking for role perspectives and not caring techniques.
Still waiting. Hospital is now “even busier” they are to call back tonight. They are taking it in stride and went to the zoo. I went into work today because the waiting around was killing me. We are ready to go down the minute she goes into labor, but foolishly made some weekend plans that will we may have to cancel.
@tx5athome - omg, I can only imagine the anticipation and frustration with the waiting!!! @rockymtnhigh2 When is your grandbaby due? DD is due September 15th and time couldn’t possibly crawl any slower than it has been crawling. (Also caused by anticipating my retirement a week before she is due. ). I will check out the Lesley Stahl book, and any other suggestions y’all have for grandparenting books.
Can you all weigh-in with your grandma (or pa) names? What are you hoping the little ones will call you? Nana, Mimi, Bigmomma, grandma, grandmother, bedstemor,… looking for more possibilities!
DIL is in labor!!! Hoping to be a grandma by the end of the day!
D is due September 20. Already got the book @mominva suggested. About 30 pages in on kindle. It’s really good!
In-laws picked Granny and Grandaddy. I liked Mimi. Just sounded good to me. H picked Papa but he reserves the right to change his mind or if baby’s chooses another name.
Interesting time for retirement @anxiousmom ! Definitely something to look forward to. H works occasionally but mostly we are both retired.
We just got a second home / vacation apartment rented near them, 20 min walk. Their home is quite small due to very high housing costs. We live 1200 miles away and I love the area where they live. Interestingly we were looking at doing this for a couple years now, but this sped it up. We can drive there and have our dog and cat with us.
We just want to be more involved in the child’s life than either of our parents were.
All we have to do is get through the summer!
@anxiousmom - I go by GG. At first I was Nana, but by the time my GD was 5 months old, I wasn’t really feeling it & when I asked myself if I wanted to be known as Nana for the rest of my life, the answer was no. GD has 2 other Grandmas who live closer, so I wanted a name that was mine alone. GD hasn’t had any trouble pronouncing it (she’s now 18 mo). DH wanted to be called Grandpa, but GD calls him Papa (She can say Grandma, though). In fact, when we video chat or talk on the phone, she calls us “GG Papa” - we’re a matched set to her.
My daughter, before she was even pregnant, but my son’s wife was, wanted me to be Bebe. My first name begins with a B, so that worked. My husband started called me that for the dogs, and before my first GD was born, I was sick of the name! My husband finally stopped using it, and now that my daughter is due in July, I have decided the name would work.
My husband early on decided he wanted to be Zayde, which I love for him. On the other hand, I didn’t want to be Bubbie, as that is my mother, and she is still alive. My SIL is Mimi for her GDs, so I knew that wasn’t an option. Unless GD 1 starts calling me something else, Bebe it will be I must have searched every article online looking for the perfect name, but nothing grabbed me. Either a name didn’t work with Zayde, or just seemed like I pulled it out of the air. I did like Lolly as I had a camp friend with that name and she was cute and perky; seemed like a fun name, but the kids vetoed it. I also like YaYa, but I will leave that for my Greek friend!
I am Mimi unless he calls me something else. DIL’s mom is Nana and my mom is Granny (DIL had a Granny, too) so those were out. My name starts with a K sound. I thought about Kiki and then that stupid song came along and my son said no. He doesn’t like Mimi either, because of the Drew Carey character, but he hasn’t suggested anything better. When my brother and I (we’re twins) were little, he couldn’t say my name and called me Diddie. I thought about that, but it sounds too much like Daddy.
Fun discussion of grandparent names earlier in this thread. Never heard of bedstemor! Danish? DH and I are Nana and Papa. Works for me.
@musicmom121, my cousin has a K name and went with Kiki; it fits her. It is funny how we associate things with a name and why we will or won’t use a name. When we were naming our new puppy 16 years ago, my daughter said no to several of the name; she said she might want that name for a future child. I will be quite surprised if her daughter ends up with any of those name, but we will see in about 6 weeks!
@rockymtnhigh2 Retirement was planned to coincide with birth; I have volunteered to do infant care for the first year. After that - eh? Who knows? Maybe a part-time job or something else. @tx5athome So EXCITING and nerve-racking. Hope for a smooth, quick, safe delivery! Keep us informed…
OOh, a new cc grandbaby!!
We have a baby girl! 6 lbs 3oz 19 inches!!! We are over the moon excited!!!
@tx5athome - congratulations! I can’t wait to hear all about your beautiful granddaughter.
Wow! Congratulations! That sounds like it was a super fast labor!
