The Grandparent Thread

My son’s wife is due in 3 weeks. I want to have something here. I am torn between a mini crib (I really like the Babyletto Origami Mini Crib) or a pack-n-play type (I like the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib) although I had not seen the Guava before and I like that too!

Going tomorrow to babysit the little miss, now six months old, so her parents can get a few hours break. I hope she likes me. She sometimes cries when she sees me. Breaks my heart.

Enjoy your visit with the baby! I bought a pack n play for $5 at a garage sale, and it is in perfect shape. That’s going to be my “grandma crib”. When I am done with it, I will donate it to goodwill!

Well, the guava set is currently on sale for anyone interested.

I also bought a perfectly clean and intact used Pack and Play with bassinette (elevated sling) addition with mobile and diaper stacker for $15 off of craigslist. Grandson is asleep in it as I type.

@VaBluebird, maybe your grandbaby associates seeing you with her parents leaving, and her crying is not about you but separation anxiety.

I bought a used crib for my house even though baby lives only a mile away. But I figure he may need to nap when they are here for holiday dinners, etc. However, they came over last night to play cards and someone held him the entire time, but he is only three weeks old right now.

S & DIL drive here, so thy’ve brought their pack-n-play when they’ve visited. The dilemma will be after baby #2 arrives when GD is exactly 2 yo. GD could be 2.5 yo by the time they visit after the birth, so do we have a slleeping bag for her or a twin size aerobed. I’m not sure they’d want GD sleeping by herself in a BR here, at least not yet. Fortunately, we’ll have time to figure that one out.

One thing my son mentioned about their Guava, and I would assume all mesh cribs, is the baby monitor has trouble seeing through the mesh sides. Unless you have the monitor above the bed, which when traveling most likely isn’t possible, he said the monitor is distorted. It hasn’t really been a problem as we/they can hear the baby, but I guess if you were watching every move, it might make it a bit difficult to see.

We bought the Guava crib for when our grandson visited from out of town. He slept so well in it that his parents took it home with them the last time they visited!

GD met Great Grandma for the first time this weekend! She lives 8 hrs away, and is 96. She, the other grandma, and GD have the same first name (my middle name). They sent a precious 4-generation photo!

And, back to cribs…the pack and play I had for my kids came in a duffel bag, but then I had to build it each time I used it. Made for easy travel, though.

My GD met my mother this winter, several months before Mom passed away. The four generation pictures are so precious to me!

My GS has two great-grandmothers and we know how lucky he is. They are over the moon to have met the next generation and the pictures are precious.

We had a great visit with granddaughter after all. Just know how to “entertain” and appease a little one, I guess.

I have already babysat GD (now one) four different weekends (SIL on Army Reserves and DD working her 12 hour nursing shifts Fri-Sat-Sun). GD is very happy with me until SIL or DD are available/in the room. Excited to see GS when he is born early July (same parents - children will be 14 months apart). Will find out soon if a distant state may be their next home, but not moving for a while if that is the case for SIL’s job. H and I are two years from retirement, so we shall see how things work out. The good thing about DD’s career is that she can work PT and hopefully also move into M - F job. GD went from walking some steps at 11 months to walking very well now. Still working on her saying “Nana”.

Just found out baby #2 (due in Nov) is a boy. So excited. GD is very independent and strong-willed. I can’t imagine how she’ll be as the big sister.

Got to snuggle with GS two nights as he fell asleep. Heaven. I stayed with him for a few days while D and SIL were at the hospital because our beautiful GD is finally here! She was four days late but certainly worth waiting for! It was fun to bring GS to meet his new baby sister. We are all so in love with her. ?

DIL is due any day. She saw her doctor on Monday and the plan is for her to go to the hospital tonight. The OB/GYN will give her something to start the labor, she will stay in the hospital overnight, and then the OB will come in tomorrow morning to see how things are going and what the next steps will be. Best case scenario the baby is born tomorrow, worst case scenario Friday. We are 80 miles away. Our plan is to drive down tomorrow morning and wait in the waiting room. We are SUPER excited!!

@snowball Maybe just get a fold up one? That’s what my parents did when we’d come to visit when the kids were little.

@tx5athome sounds like your DIL is doing the same thing mine did. She went to the hospital on a Wednesday night and they gave her something to start the process. The baby was born at 6:11 p.m. on Thursday.

He will be six weeks old tomorrow. DIL brought him by my office today (she had business across the street) and he has grown so much since I last saw him just a week ago. I get to babysit in a few weeks. Wish me luck. It’s been 29 years since I took care of a baby!

@musicmom1215, it’s like riding a bike!
