The Grandparent Thread

Wow – so her babies are 14 months apart?? Wow!!

Yeah!!! Fantastic! Congratulations, Grandma!

Congratulations!!!

Congrats, @SOSConcern.

Bumping this up so it doesn’t get lost in the new format here. I am 6 weeks away from retirement, and hopefully 7 weeks or less away from grandbaby boy! Time moved so slowly those first months, but now time is zipping by! Anyone else out there expecting a new grandbaby?

Expecting grandbaby #2 (this time it’s a boy) in Nov. Can’t wait to meet the little guy, but I’m not sure how GD who turns 2 right before the due date will react - as a typical first born, she’s used to getting alot of attention.

September, first grandchild. Very excited!

Congratulations @SOSConcern! So glad all went smoothly. And congratulations to all expecting new additions to their families.
We are spoiled - GS lives near by and we see him pretty much every week. However, they were on vacation the first week of July and we left for 2 1/2 weeks before they got home so as of yesterday we hadn’t seen him in almost a month. Wow, what a difference those weeks make! He’s a real little boy now, more than a baby! He “talks!” if you consider shrieking happily in response to others talking…I do! They sent a hysterical video of him and his little friend “talking” about a toy. If your ears can handle the volume and high pitch, it’s just the most precious thing. He’s army crawling, showing real recognition of his parents and his things, and starting to show some separation anxiety when mom leaves for work. He’s also acquired two teeth since we saw him last.
They just change so fast. And they’re already talking about trying for a second - he’s 8.5 months old and my DIL is 37. S2 is getting married in March and I think the goal is to start trying right afterwards so they would be 2 years apart. I don’t think they could handle 14 months like your D and SIL @SOSConcern.

9week old GD came for a visit today! She is so cute!!

Hope everyone is having a great summer! Congratulations to all with such good news!

GD is two months old now, and becoming more interactive and smiley. She really loves her mama! D and SIL went out for an evening and H and I were ‘in charge’ for about six hours. She had her first two bottles and it was not easy…

GS, almost 2-1/2, has been wonderful and continues to be quite delightful. He has a fun sense of humor. Earlier this week, he was a little fussy, and D told him that nobody likes whining. He stopped and then said, “Dada like wine.”

Kids sent an adorable picture of GS yesterday happily playing in a laundry basket with his first tooth prominently featured in a broad smile! Who needs toys!

22 month old GD just left after a 4 day visit with her parents. She is delightful about 90+% of the time which is pretty good for her age. I wish she was closer than 15 hours away. I was in FL to see her 6 weeks earlier and I can tell a difference in her communications skills in that short period of time. It will be fun to be retired in a few years and to go visit her in the winter season (not possible now for this teacher) and to enjoy her along with the FL weather.

So proud of D&SIL taking a parent class from the hospital. It went over CPR, securing the home , and other topics.

I have a question, are there any ideas about books or web sites that are good or your kids really liked for first time parents about regular medical concerns about the baby? Like what to do for colic, when to worry about a temp, how much to feed, etc?

I guess they wouldn’t want Dr. Benjamin Spock’s baby book  I know my kids just look every thing up online; neither wanted a physical book. Well, that isn’t totally true, they both used Moms on Call; I just don’t know how much deals with medical. I know the young parents I have talked to use it for working on schedules and sleeping.

My daughter reads online sites and groups, talks extensively with friends, and calls my H (former pediatrician) for anything medical related. She’ll chat with me about concerns and questions, but it’s amazing how much has changed. Like not just the back-sleeping, but the accompanying swaddling, wearable blankets, no crib bumpers, etc. feeding schedule is totally different, as far as solid foods. Car seats are backwards forever. I work hard to be a good resource, but goodness things are different! I do not think, though, that there is any specific book, at least for my folks.

There actually is a new, updated Dr. Spock book. I actually know and work with the doc who was chosen to revise the book after meeting with Mrs. Spock. He is a developmental pediatrician and one of the most genuine, calm, kind, kid advocates I know.

There is a new update every few years.

There are tons of mommy blogs out there - as well as FB groups…some probably even local to anyone having a new baby. The trick is finding the group or blog or site that is the best fit for the new mom!

@abasket I knew there had been a revised edition, but had no idea there had been one so recently. My copy of Dr. Spock was well used and loved; it was actually in my hand when my son had a febrile seizure as a toddler. I knew it was going to happen, because Dr. Spock said so.
With the internet I find the young parents just search for what they are looking for. It almost became an obsession for my daughter when she was trying to figure out what to do for her newborn daughter as she spits up all the time. I think my daughter drove herself crazy for a couple of weeks trying to “fix” her daughter. While she still spits up more than normal, my daughter has finally realized it will be ok and she most likely will outgrow this in a few months. Like anything else, too much google searching is not a good thing!

I’ve tried to search though this thread but I cannot find the info. What do your kids or you like for a portable bassinet/ bed? Something they could use for a few months as an infant and then for travel. I did see mention of pack n play but it looks rather big?

Pack and play it is. The most recent favorite rock n play cradle was recalled this past winter. Several infants died. There were several brands, most Fisher Price. GD loved hers.

My kids had a dedicated bassinet for their home but we got a pack n play for when he visits here. The one they bought has a bassinet adaptor that could’ve been used when he was smaller but it’s amazing how fast they grow out of it! He’s 9 months now and sleeps in the more playpen-like configuration.
