The Indian class of 2021 Results Thread! [EA/ED/RD]

are there any colleges better than UPITT or NCSU whose admission is open right now… rolling admissions.

Strength of the program: Some schools are stronger in some areas but pretty weak in others. Overall rankings are secondary. This will have a direct impact on your employability.
Location: This will have an impact on your job and internship prospects, as well as overall livability.
Cost: It's not worth selling your kidney to attend an expensive private school.
Fit: Find out what kind of students go to that school and whether you'll fit in.

How does someone assess this.

:)) :))

@manasvini234 This provides a list of universities whose admission deadlines are later than usual: www.blog.prepscholar.com/colleges-with-late-application-deadlines-complete-list

Whether UPITT or NCSU is better varies. Take factors that are important to you - cost, location etc and research it individually. You could start a new thread here on college confidential to get input from those who may actually know better about this.

In terms of ranking, some universities may be well known overall, but some of their individual areas may be weaker. For example, according to QS world ranking, UPITT is ranked higher than NCSU, but in computer science, NCSU is ranked higher. And this is just one ranking system - different rankings are there online.

You may want to check this out: http://colleges.startclass.com/compare/3110-3768/North-Carolina-State-University-at-Raleigh-vs-University-of-Pittsburgh-Pittsburgh-Campus

If cost is a more important factor for you, it’s better to go to a cheaper university. I believe NCSU has cheaper

@manasvini234
There is absolutely no point doing engineering in India. 97% of Indian engineers are unemployable.

Usually, schools with rolling admissions are not as good as those with deadlines. There are some good schools tho (like U Alabama, UT Dallas, Illinois Tech, etc).

If cost is a factor, then I guess Rutgers is the way. It’s a good school.

For every university, you must research the four factors I mentioned individually. Scour their websites. Scour CC for threads. Make your own threads. Use a site called U-N-I-G-O (can’t post links here) for student reviews.

hey is this thread only for American universities??

@mundanewarrior, we’ve scoured websites of S’s admitted schools and are down to
UT Dallas(biomed) and U Buffalo SUNY(chem&biological). Do you reckon UTD a better school academically (international student)? There are mixed reviews…Thanks!

@Neverfalter99
UT Dallas has a reputation for engineering. It also has a huge international student population. And it is known for not offering a traditional college experience.

I don’t know much about SUNY Buffalo but I think weather would be an issue.

Accepted to UT Dallas.

Hey guys, I need your advice.
I’m just done with my boards and I have decided to take a drop year.
My Stats kind of look like this:

9th- 8.4 CGPA
10TH- 9.2 CGPA

SAT 1st attempt - 1190 (My watch froze, couldn’t keep a track of time. Circled almost nothing in the read section)

SAT 2nd attempt- 1530/1600 (Yes, I did take 2 watches to the exam center this time.)

Zonal level debator.
Zonal level Football player.
Red and black belt in Taekwondo.
Recommendation from my chemistry teacher who isolated/found/discovered/I don’t even know what a darn compound.
Other insignificant stuff.

Things I PLAN to do in my drop year:

Give SAT again, Avg. score for CALTECH I guess is 1550
Give AP Maths AB
Work hard enough to get a black belt. (Red and black comes second to black)
Prepared for JEE.
Write a novel. (Optional, Yes I’ve a real interest in literature although I’m no connoisseur)
Give SAT subject tests.

What other things do you guys suggest I could do? One real factor that I’m really concerned about is my religion. I’m muslim and US is kind of allergic to “us”.
There are other factors too.
I hope you guys could suggest something. May Allah bless you with whatever you dream of.

@SetuShah10 you are supposed to add them yourself.

@PseudoGod You could easily crack Calc BC if you’re preparing for IIT. No need to undervalue yourself. Besides, you get an AB subscore on that test anyway.

I’d say that you shouldn’t try to get a better score on the SAT. Frankly, 1530 should be okay, since they will see a huge improvement (they won’t know the circumstances of your first score). You should focus more on doing more stuff that would add to your application. Challenge yourself academically (take the hardest courses available) and also do more stuff outside school. Much more than what you’re planning. You have 2-3 years, so use them wisely. Focus on getting your other grades up too.

Thanks @mundanewarrior!

@PseudoGod
A couple things right off the bat:

  • []Do NOT prepare for JEE. That time could be better used elsewhere. US colleges don’t care about a retarded entrance exam.
    [
]There is also no need to take the SAT again. Anything above 1500 is more or less the same.

There is some confusion. You completed your 12th boards, right? Where’s your 11th grade marks?

Now that you’ve recovered time from NOT preparing for JEE or SAT again, you need to invest this time in useful stuff. Find ECs, especially those related to your desired major. Anything to keep you busy. Get a job. Learn an instrument. Improve your football/debate skills: go state level. The admission officers want to see that you’ve made good use of this gap year.

About APs: If you take the APs next May, they will be of no use for your college applications. If you want to improve your college application, then take the APs this May. The registration is closed now but the late registration opens in April (12th April, I believe). If at all possible, take multiple APs this May.

Keep in mind that you do NOT have a lot of time. For most colleges, the early deadline is November 15 and the regular deadline is January 1. How much do you think you can get done by then? You’ll be surprised how quickly time flies by; you start writing your essays and before you know it, it’s deadline day.

All of this is, of course, only if you want to get into a selective school (you mentioned Caltech). If you’re okay with a less “prestigious” school, then you can even apply right now; there are schools with rolling admissions that will easily accept you.

Thankyou guys @mundane and @HB1999 for the reply, you don’t know how much this helps. May Allah bless you with everything you desire for. I could only find little information about the application process on the internet (forgive the indecency of my incompetence). I cannot afford a counsellor or find someone who could guide me through the application process. Your suggestions and advices would help me alot.

I did not mention my 11th grades because they were unfathomably deflated - 62%
Desired Major- CS
I didn’t take up the subject in my highschool years. I plan to learn it on my own through online websites.

  1. Yes, I’ll be giving the AP’s through late registration this May. As, @HB1999 pointed out, I am ambivalent about taking AB or BC. How hard AP chem and AP physics? WHAT MORE AP’S DO YOU GUYS SUGGEST I COULD TAKE?
  2. About the EC’s, I plan to get promoted to black belt
I play violin (Beginner) and plan to learn more of it. I teach kids in local madarsa and plan to get them enrolled in schools( Only if Allah wills it).
  3. If I do succeed in writing a novel and get some slack out of it, how much do you think it’d help my application?
  4. I do agree with @mundanewarrior that managing time is the most important thing that I should focus on. I have made a timeline that I plan to follow. Is there anyway you could suggest any changes or any additions you would suggest to make if I message my timeline personally?
  5. Would the religion factor somehow lower my chances of getting into universities? I am an Indian muslim and what I’ve observed is that whatever hate/criticism comes against is towards muslims of the arabic countries. The grass is always greener on the other side. I think instead of weakening my application it could work as a boon given the fact that all universities try to maintain a cultural diversity and I’m an INDIAN muslim. What are your views in this regard?

Thankyou guys @mundanewarrior and @hb1999 for the replies, you don’t know how much this helps. May Allah bless you with whatever you desire. I could find little to no information about the application process (forgive the indecency of my incompetence)
I cannot afford getting a counsellor or find someone who could help me in the application process. All your advices and suggestions would help me alot.

Yes, I didn’t mention my 11th grade scores because of how unfathomably low they are- 62%

  1. About the EC’s, as @mundanewarrior pointed out I plan to get promoted to black belt.
I play violin (Beginner) and plan to learn more of it. I teach kids in the local mosque and plan to get them enrolled in a school nearby. Although it’s unlikely that’d happen given the fact that formal education culture is mundane in their regard.

  2. @hb1999, I’ll be giving the AP exams through late registration this May. I am ambivalent about deciding over the two maths AP exam. WHAT MORE AP EXAMS DO YOU SUGGEST I COULD TAKE?

  3. If I do succeed in writing a novel how much do you guys think it would help my application if I get some slack out of it?

  4. Should I be worried about the religion factor? What I have observed is that
most of the hate/criticism comes towards muslims is against the muslims of arabian countries. The grass is always greener on the other side, instead of weakening my chances it could work as a boon for me since I’m an INDIAN muslim and universities try to maintain cultural diversity. (Just a perception)
What are your views on this?

  5. As @mandanewarrior pointed out that time management is something that I should be really worried about. I have made a timeline about how I’ll carry out everything in my drop year. Could I in any way personal message you whole of it and you could suggest some changes or additions I could make. It’d help me so much.

  6. What are my chances of getting into Caltech or harvard (lol). What safe schools should I consider?
