Hi! The-happy-neighborhood-tuna-fish is back with a question! :)

I got into these colleges and programmes. NOW I’m totally confused as to where I should be headed. Some places, I didn’t really get in yet, but I’m appealing. So, even if though I probably won’t get in (the chances are verrry verrrry low to get through after appealing), I’d request you guys to put this into your ranking as well.

1) NUS (Singapore) (Comp Engg). [with tuition grant, which cuts most of the fee)
2) NTU (Singapore) (Comp Engg+BBA). [same as above]
3) Warwick (UK) (Math+Statistics) [Full Fee]
4) UCL (UK) (Math+Economics) [Full Fee]
5) Kings (UK) (CompSci+Math) [Full Fee]
6) UC Los Angeles (USA) (CompSci and Engineering) [Full Fee]
7) CMU (USA) (MechE) [waitlisted for Comp Engg] [Full Fee]
8) uMich (USA) (MechE) [Full Fee]
9) Purdue (USA) (Comp Engg) [Full Fee]
10) UC Berkeley (USA) (Comp Engg) [Didn’t get in, but appealed- so, if by a 1/234737974 chance I do get in, I wouldn’t have to ask all over again!] :)

Now, could you PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE rank them in order of preference… taking into account the following factors in decreasing order of importance!
Prestige>Starting Salary Averages>Opportunities>Cost>Experience.
Thanks sooo much!!

-tUnA :)

UCLA gives aid to internationals?

nope, they don’t. that’s what i said- i have to pay the full fee… :)

You mind telling your stats,so I can get an idea of what these schools want?(Especially for the first 2)…:)

CMU/UMich/UCLA if prestige is the name of your game

@smartchap: well, i’m an SIA-Youth scholars-which means i went to singapore after the 10th grade. (they choose 20-odd people from india). so it’s fairly easy for me to get in. for you, i’d say singaporean universities are real suckers for board marks- so slog it out for exams, alright? second, if you have anything at national level/international level, they really love that. NUS and NTU should definitely not be a problem.
Stats: 2220 SAT reasoning; 800s for SAT subject tests- screwed my rank (overslept and missed an exam- looong looooong story), 3 math olympiad gold/silvers, 1 cyber silver, a few research projects and a lot of CCA stuff. (i guess the CCA part was my strong point, the rank was the weakness- was actually top few before the exam-missing-fiasco happened). so what’s your order of preference among the 9?

@tetris: yay for tetris! haha! i must say you’re always here to help and that’s awesome- best of luck for your own admissions this year. make us proud! haha! and thanks! and oh- which one would you choose among UCLA, CMU and Mich… if the factors influencing the decisions are Prestige>Starting Salary Averages>Opportunities>Cost>Experience. thanks again! :)

@others: c’mon! reply, people! :)

my preference would be UCLA,UMich,NUS,NTU in that order

and thanks for that reply!NUS/NTU is my first choice…hmm…so,Boards are everything for them,eh?What about SATs?

@smartchap: you’re totally welcome! umm… i’d say boards aren’t everything- BUT without boards, it’s impossible. so, i’d say you’d need great preboards and boards (aim for 93%+ to be on the safer side, though i’ve seen people with lower numbers make it). i’ve HEARD (i think this is just a rumor), but they do ask about your JEE rank too!!! SATs- they don’t really care. things like NTSE, Ranji Trophy Cricket, National Publication, National Olympiad Medals, Published research REALLY do the trick for them- unlike the US universities, one or two of these should be enough, really!
and thanks for your reply! :)

someone? anyone? reply!!
right now it seems to be UCLA, CMU, uMich, NUS —> please rank among them if you can!
(the UK ones seem to be pretty dead… they’re that bad ah?)

If you get into CMU for computer engineering, there’s nothing like it. But is MechE really OK for you? As in, do you really want CompE?

If you do, then it’s between UCLA and UMich. Ann Arbor vs. LA. What’s your pick?

I’d say eliminate UCLA…

If it were me…i’d choose CMU among the american ones…
mainly cuz the food and the campus are awesome

I have a thing against U mich even though i got in for MechE…
I don’t like michigan weather…its so cold and gloomy all year round :/

hahah! hi5 prateek! i have this thing against umich too, i don’t know why- but yeah!
i guess both of us are in a similar situation! (you’re waitlisted at ECE too, right?)- oh, and btw… UCLA DEFINITELY has the bestestest food… it’s among the best in the country, ditto for campus… even though i can confidently say that CMU is higher ranked than UCLA for engineering, UCLA seems to hold more prestige for americans- plus, it’s in california and i had a feeling the proximity to the silicon valley might help… whatsay? and if you’d like to IM/email or sth… i could PM you my contact details… :)

others- i’m STILL confused- help help yelp! :)

I don’t like UCLA…I never bothered applying…
Silicon Valley…hmm
[Carnegie Mellon Silicon Valley - Carnegie Mellon University](<a href=“CMU Silicon Valley”>CMU Silicon Valley)

CMU pizzas are heaven…trust me…

Choosing a college based on pizza? :p

It’s very important to my life :p

I would choose based on the proximity to a Ben & Jerry’s outlet

Then you would choose CMU…
Altough Haagen-Dazs is better :P

Haagen-Dazs is classier and, talking solely about pure taste (ruling out all other factors like diversity of flavours), it would be the better.

But dude. No one else has Cherry Garcia!

wait! they have ben & jerry’s in india?!?!! where? how? when? i’ve been craving for it ever since i got here!!

No no no they don’t. My last experience with B & J’s was in Singapore last summer. Can’t wait to attack it again next month :D

^ Ditto for me…although September wasn’t summer…
