The infamous countdown to I-Day

Actually, 2011 and 2010 would be the first classes they meet. Have fun with that.

i dunno...i saw some 2011'ers from on here on i-day ;)

I meant "meet" them... We never really "met" 2011 until the school year, if you get what I mean ;)
No, I have faith you all will do fine.

I am aware that no matter what time you arrive you will get a very warm welcome, but what time is the worst? Best? For arriving on I-day that is...

You do NOT want to be late! I can ASSURE you of that! I know the LAST person that arrived from the class of 2012 and it's all funny now, but in the infamous picture of him being chewed out on the footprints---yikes....I would NOT wish that on anyone!

Mid- morning. If you get there too early, it'll be cold outside. But we'll discuss this when you guys come out for orientation and as the time gets closer

Nova going all the way this year!

I digress- But no way!! Nova's gettin knocked out next time lol

UK vs Creighton? oooo sounds exciting lol Creighton should have gotten into the NCAA tourney. that was bull haha but I also found out that all the people who lived were i did, mostly went to Western KY. I'm very proud of them for knockin off illinois! haha

but ya, definately hope I am not late haha that would suck.

...
we should just start a thread for the basketball chit chat haha :)

Hey, does anyone know how the Cadet Sponsor Program works?? Not sure if that is the right name for it...but i'm talking about where you can stay with a family the day before i-day, and then they take you to Doolittle Hall on i'day... has anyone done that before??? And how can you sign up for it if you don't get your airline ticket untl the first or second week of June?

hurdlechick,

That program is called, "Bed & Breakfast" and it's wonderful for Appointees that are traveling alone to I-day. There will be information about it in your packet of information. I'm pretty sure you will get your airline ticket well before the 1st or 2nd week of June, unless you are getting yours on your own. I honestly don't know the situation then but when you receive the information about B&B, there will be a contact person and phone number so they will be able to help you out.

Enjoy the remaining months and good luck!

hurdlechick,
Maybe I am confused but it sounds like you are planning to get your own airline ticket. If you do the "Bed and Breakfast", which is really a wonderful program, and go on your own without parents, the AFA sends you an airline ticket. That will be taken care of by AFA and they work it all out based on your home or closest airport.

There are several cadets who took advantage of the program and can answer your questions about the program but most cadets are on Spring Break somewhere and you may have to wait until they are all back online to get answers.

As flymom said, the info will come in your packet.

https://www.usafa.org/Events/Register.aspx?id=60

Don't worry about not being able to register until the last minute-iirc, I didn't get my airline ticket 'til the beginning of June (and only then because I got on the phone asking about my ticket... :) )

The way it works is your host family will meet you at the airport, pick you up, provide dinner and a place to stay, and they'll take you to your doom. ;) Many families end up being yoru sponsor family for the year if you want them to. I had a great family.

imo, it's a good option because you have someone to answer questions, sort of calm you down (I got a little excited...?), and have a homecooked meal before Basic. I'm sure there were a lot of kids at, say, the Academy hotel, and that could've been fun too, but having a permanent party member and his wife talk to me helped me the best.

(To be honest, I pretty much slept the whole day, and played with their kids, then didn't sleep that night at all because I was nervous, lol)

My cadets were picked up at COS by their sponsor family who treated them to a great night in their home, then the dad dropped them off and even stayed with them for a little while on their big day. They even called us to tell us how the guys did, and sent us a picture from that morning. It still brings a tear to my eye.

Wonderful folks, those sponsor families. I can't say enough great things about them.

Thank you so much for the information! Yeah, I meant the AFA airline ticket, not buying my own. lol sorry about that. i got my packet and was slightly confused-there's so much information!

"The way it works is your host family will meet you at the airport, pick you up, provide dinner and a place to stay, and they'll take you to your doom."

I suppose that's a nice way of putting it...? lol Either way, I wasn't sure about the Bed and Breakfast Program, but it sounds like a great thing to do. Thanks again!

I remember reading somewhere in the mass of material, "Don't be first and don't be last". We also bought into the "don't do anything or wear anything that draws attention to yourself". I'm sure there are those who want to show their personality, but our daughter wore the most boring outfit we could find. No make-up, no jewerly, hair already up in regs, aughhh..the photos say it all. She still remembers the day, of course, but says that humor (not smiling or laughing, mind you!) and a realization that this day will eventually pass helped. Best wishes to all!

The way it works is your host family will meet you at the airport, pick you up, provide dinner and a place to stay, and they'll take you to your doom.

I had to chuckle with "take you to your doom." Parents taking their kids to a normal college would take them to their dorm. What a difference one letter makes!

Good luck class of 2013! If I may offer a couple words of advice - Remember you're not the first or last experiencing this, it's not personal and most important keep your sense of humor!

amen to dadandgrad! :)

Speaking of I-Day... All the pictures of I-Day I've seen have really nice weather. It is very uncommon for weather in CO to be bad in the morning but has it ever been awful?

88 days...

Oh and Dadandgrad... Humor? Are we allowed to keep that as basics?

From what I've heard, I-day is always dark and stormy. LOL

The cadre can take a lot of things away, and they will, but you must not let them take away your sense of humor! My cadet told me that it was one of two things that got her through, the other being chapel.
Always remember, its not personal, its just the BEAST. Keep smiling but only on the inside.:)
