Does anyone feel awkward or slightly uncomfortable when people ask you where you want to go for college? Usually, most people say something like, "I'm still looking..." but what if it's after the deadline and they ask you again? Sometimes, it's best to keep your target school under wraps but what's the best way to respond to this question?

I usually say “I’m looking at some liberal arts colleges, but I haven’t really decided yet… They all look great!” (Actually I do have a college in mind, but as you said “it’s best to keep your target school under wraps”)

Then their next question would be, “So what do you want to study?”

Then I draw the conversation away from what college I want to go to to something else.

University of Tokyo to study German

What if it’s after the deadline?

I just say “Whatever college accepts me.” They usually get a good laugh out of it.

What Samonuh said.

I usually say one of my match schools or whichever school gives me the most money

This. 10 char.

why wouldn’t you tell them what college you want to go to? My whole school knows I’m going to Yale.

Knowing that Stanford rejects 93% of its applicants, this year I’m trying to “keep it low”. My friends know, but I i’m not trying to tell everyone. I don’t want all kids to know because after December 15th, If I get rejected, I really don’t want people asking me the same question from 1st period to last period.

Thats true, but it would be really awkward if you did make it and no one in your school even knew that you applied.

I’m a junior and people are always asking me, it’s so odd… I usually tell them “It depends where I get in,” or I’ll tell them “Emory if I can get in, or Tulane.” If I don’t get into Emory or Tulane and everyone knows I wanna’ go to one of the two, it’s gonna’ be pretty embarassing haha…

:D atleast you can tell the grades above you because they wont be there when the results come

My friends know. Some of them have big mouths so I’m sure they probably told 1 or 2 extra people. If I get accepted, awkwardness would be the last thing on my mind lol.

i just say that i don’t know yet. i really like all of the colleges i’m applying to, so i can’t really decide.

Lol, I usually say one of my safety schools. I’ve told a couple of teachers and some of my closest friends I’d actually like to go to a competitive school, but no one else. I don’t really like the idea of everyone knowing where I want to go and then getting rejected… Having to say “oh I got rejected” is more awkward then no one knowing and getting accepted… Actually, I don’t even think that getting accepted without people knowing is awkward at all.

Sometime last year, I came up with the answer, “IDK, just somewhere warm insert smile and laugh” since I can’t imagine myself freezing my ass off for 4 years in New England. But it’s a great way to give a vague answer to a question I don’t really like.

I totally agree with the last 2 posters. The good thing about applying early action/decision is that not as many people ask about acceptances/rejections in December. But in April, everyone and their mothers want to know which school you got accepted to. I’ve also learned that when I meet a student from the high school class of 2011, I should refrain from asking them what college they go to. Sometimes it gets very awkward.

@neuroscience,

Very true.

I feel you guys. For one thing, to get rejected from your dream school is going to be hard to deal with. It’s going to hurt even more to have to tell people that you got rejected. That’s one reason I’m hesitant about telling where I’m applying. But there are some super-competitive kids who will ask away until they get a pretty good idea. The conversation usually goes like this:

Them: Are you applying early?
Me: (You have to tell them the truth. They’ll know anyways) Yeah…
Them: Where are you applying?
Me: Um…not quite sure yet.
Them: Which ones are you thinking and which ones are on your list?
Me: Every school
Them: Every school? Are you applying to HYPMS?

If it’s after the November deadline, I don’t know how you can get away from not telling them. At that point, you can’t really say you don’t know, can you? Because that would be a blatant big white lie. Perhaps there’s a polite way to respond without giving away your target school?

When I was at Exeter it was considered kind of rude to ask someone where they were applying or going until like April when they actually knew. But of course everyone there is aiming for a top school.
