Cut a long story short, I applied to 1 safe school, 3 reach schools and 5 chance schools. I got into the highest ranking reach school but was rejected by the other two. For my chance schools, I was waitlisted for 2 of 5 and might be accepted to one. Here is where the irony comes in: I got waitlisted for my instate safety. It's about er, 30 ranks away from my lowest reach school. Everyone in my class got in and received about 20k+ of scholarship.(That's like 15 people!!) I don't know whether to laugh or cry. The situation is just ludicrous. I mean, how many of you got into your chance and reach schools and got rejected by your safety??? lol, karma...

Therein lies the problem. Acceptances are not all about rankings and scores.

Maybe the disdain for your safety that comes through in this post was also reflected in your application.

How did he show disdain? Please tell me that getting into Harvard is just as easy as getting into my local state, that would take a lot of weight of my shoulder. I think anyone would be mildly surprised if an Ivy accepted him, yet the local state waitlisted him.

Seeing as it is a waitlist, and not a rejection, me thinks Tufts Syndrome. They know that they will not yield you, yada yada. If you were rejected from other schools, however, if this is the case and you call them and ask in, they should be more than happy.

Also, did you apply for that scholarship? That shows the adcoms that you are interested in their school and it is not merely a “safety”.

I think a lot of state schools – at least in my state – have gotten cocky in the present economy. Their adcoms arent used to dealing with a lot of applications – although no one knows how many apps are serisous and how many kids are going to show up.

What was your instate safety? Are you sure that your application was complete? Any chance they confused your application with another student’s, something that occasionally happens? Did you apply late to a rolling admission state school? With rolling admission schools, admission standards rise as the year progresses and spaces decrease.

Ditto institutional aid. When the money’s gone, that’s the end of the fat merit packages. This is one thing geekson’s high school GC has 100% right; she tells our students to apply as early as they can. geekson bagged his safeties by October.

Our state flagship couldn’t care less about “yield” from a Tufts syndrome perspective. If you apply and you meet the standards and there’s space for you, then you’re in. But the same school limited enrollment and reduced merit awards this year because of budget uncertainty.
