This type of article will fuel even more craziness. Many will gloss at the story and grab the few headlines that suggest that the offers for Stanford grads are in that 500,000 range. Just as readers will ignore the simple fact that more than 40,000 students applied for the 1,700 spots at Stanford, they will ignore that some of those companies are either extremely small or deluged with resumes from all over the world. And probably ignore that the few chosen ones might be EXTREMELY special, and perhaps the new generation of the Google founders.
Although the article did not hide the part that not everyone makes a ton of money right out of school --or even before-- the reality is that Stanford is not a magic red carpet to a life of untold riches. Just as Andrew Luck and a few of his teammates are rolling into the NFL TV bucks, many have come back to earth, and are working --hard-- to survive. The same is true in the darling careers that are currently all the rage.
However, however, there are plenty of students who pursue their dreams of changing the world for a better place and are snapping up jobs at NGO or non-profits or in education that pay … less than their annual tuition represented.
Stanford is a special place and is a place for special people. They do come with different ambitions and objectives. It would be sad that the only one might be the next Snapchat or Facebook coveted hire.
Xiggi,
A good friend’s daughter graduated from Stanford. Went to a great grad school.
She is going to work in the environmental field which she loves. She isn’t going to make a lot of money, but she is going to have a great life.
I like your post.

Yes, I read the same article. That was a good laugh.
(the Yahoo discussion was even more entertaining - I think this republic is indeed doomed based on the collective intelligence exhibited on the Yahoo discussion boards)
Nobody offers new college grad $500K for a starting salary.
The headline did say $150K - but that’s still rather uncommonly high even for a very expensive area such as the Bay Area.
$150,000 annual pay is high even for Stanford bachelor’s degree graduates (even in CS).

What kind of a biology job pays $6,100?
Peace Corps?
That may be someone who only got limited amounts of temporary lab tech work.
