The meaning of life?

too philosophical!

I like philosophy, it really makes you think. It's not something concrete that you can hold in your hands (say versus science or math, not that I don't adore those subjects), it's a very abstract subject, and it takes a lot of mental strength to muddle through philosophy

jskim...that? too philosophical? really? are u sure columbia's right for you.. i mean the core is pretty philosophy heavy

maybe penn wouldve been a better choice...

Life is what happens while you are busy making other plans.
John Lennon

OOO you know John Lennon was shot today.... 24 years ago!! :(

Moment of silence for him..

to suffer (space filler)

I love philosophy!!!

yay! spaaaaaaaaaaace

gabeeeeeeeee

Yes, but the fact that we live in a box isn't really the problem. It's what we do in the box, and the size and decor of the box that matters. We want to be moving up to the next-sized box.
We all choose our boxes - or have them chosen for us. Many of us want to be in the Columbia box.

Hello! I've never read the Columbia board until now (since I'm not applying here), but I really like this "meaning of life" topic! I've always wondered, just like silver_wavez (aka chris from singapore--that's so cool that you live there!), what the ultimate meaning of life was since all we do is to constantly go through endless years of...nothing, really. I mean, in the end, we all die (even if we don't want to--in fact, I think it would be cool to be able to perhaps live forever...although that would make life even more meaningless).

Ummm...anyway, the thing is, why do we strive toward getting good grades, getting in a good college, getting a job, and getting money when the ultimate result is always the same? We're erased from the earth no matter what we do. Ooooh...sorry my post is so depressing! Ackkk! I didn't mean to make it that way!

I really want to make a lasting impact on the world. Perhaps I can find a way to save the rainforests, children in impoverished countries, etc... But Earth will disappear in 10 billion (or maybe million) years anyway, so what is the point of existence when there is no hope?

Perhaps, then, life is about relationships with friends, family, and your ultimate soul mate (I hope I can find him someday! ^^). Perhaps it's about living everyday as if the world would never end, as if your accomplishments would mean something in the future, as if your love makes the lives of others more meaningful...

But I'm rambling...(it is 1:00 AM in the morning, anyway!) But anyway, I really LOVE this topic (since I love philosophical questions). I've just never had anyone to discuss it with, though, so more people need to REPLY!!! Hehe

when i figure this out.. i will write a book on it... read it then.. and hopefully i'll have answered lots of questions and figured a lot of it out!

muah * best of luck!

gfefe, when ur dead ur not gonna know ur dead

The answer to the question of life, the universe, and everything:

42

That is all.

alright wow, instead of wasting time on this pointless thread silver_wavez, you could be out meeting people and doing something much more productive lol

The answer to all the questions in life...is that there is no answer -_-

"The answer to all the questions in life...is that there is no answer -_-"

That Is So True.

WILL IT EVER MATTER THAT YOU KNOW THE ANSWER TO LIFE? YOU ARE STILL GOING TO LIVE THE SAME WAY, RIGHT?

I have had thoughts similar to Silver's many times about why all of this is important, and I feel that the main benefit would be to actually meet fascinating people like those on this board and have intellectual discussions. Also, the education and competitiveness would ensure that I live up to my potential as a student (unless I think it's too hard and just give up, but hopefully the work would be interesting enough to prevent that).

Yo you all need to learn how to smoke a blunt and jus chill out damn

smoke a blunt?...no!..i dont need garbage like that to chill out..
