I live in Texas, and am pretty sure that I will not be able to afford a school over 20k tuition, but if I am planning on med school, should I limit my searches to 10k? I am guaranteed admission to UT at Austin because I am in the top 7%, so if this a good school for my pre med studies if it only costs 9k? Was originally thinking about JHU or Northwestern, but will scholarships really make a dent in their steep out of state costs? How can I best find a top notch pre med education without making med school unaffordable? btw my parents make around 200k a year, will this put significant financial aid out of reach?

Northwestern and JHU give need based aid primarily. You will not qualify for that with a family income of $200,000.

If you are even thinking about medical schools, you want to limit your debt to the absolute minimum for undergrad. UT is just fine…its a great school. There are many doctors who graduated from their state flagship.

You are lucky to be in-state for Texas. For Texas residents, public medical schools in Texas (and private Baylor) are relative bargains among medical schools. If you do go to such a medical school, your debt load will likely be much lower than it would otherwise be, giving you greater freedom of choice as to what specialty to go into (i.e. you would not feel the debt pressure to choose one of the highest paid specialties if you would otherwise want to do one of the lower paid specialties).

You need to ask your parents how much they’ll pay each year since you will be a “full pay” student unless you apply to a school where you’d get good-sized scholarships.

Texas has excellent med schools (all US MD schools are excellent. Texas med schools aren’t hard to get into if you have med school worthy stats.
