I almost bought a pair of these from sale rack at DSW (black $30, white $35) because I really loved the same style in silver for a wedding last Oct. Surprisingly comfy. But…. the heel, though not spikely, won’t be good for a park wedding/reception. (If it were, I’d wear the silver ones I own.) And for now I’ll focus on wedding priority.
Well, none of the other dresses ordered looked as good as royal blue with sequins but I’m not sure about me and sequins. I have a few more weeks to ponder.
Maybe I will take a photo of H in tailored suit and me (in the dress) and ask S and fiancée if we look ok or if they want us to wear something else? Will wait another 2 weeks or so.
Uh oh… just found a FB group called “Mother of the Bride or Groom Dresses and Shoes” (find it with FB Search). So far I have not joined, just browsed for ideas. It includes a lot of For Sale posts and Wanted. What I like is there are photos of real people of all sizes in their dresses as well as models from ads.
Not sure I’d ever mess with buying a dress from here, since not able to return. But it is fun to view a variety of dresses…. and a nice jumpsuit at the top today.
Buying any garment without the ability to try it on and return if it doesn’t work is a nonstarter for me, though looking for ideas (like window shopping) does have its place.
I only buy non-returnable items when I’m positive the person will love it (or I will keep it if they don’t). Sizes, fabric, fit can vary from year to year, even in same brand, color and model.
Thanks for cueing us in to this interesting new venue.
Well, I ordered four dresses. Am keeping one. It has some burgundy, but is mostly pink. It’s not super fancy, so I’ll be able to wear it for other events if not for the wedding (it was $54) – not going to lose sleep over it. The one I though was a winner looked terrible on me.
There are some styles I like on the overseas sites, but have seen so many comments on poor fit and quality that I’m reluctant to go there. OTOH, this wedding’s in September, so fall-ish colors may be more widely available in the next couple of months.
@CountingDown, can you please post a link or photo of the dress you’re keeping to help give us ideas in our searches? Thx.
That is a beautiful shoe!
Bride has requested that I (MOG) wear red to match son’s vest. Wedding colors are teal and red. Glad I asked what to wear because I would not have looked for red otherwise. I need a petite and options were very limited. Many red dresses are not what I would consider MOG appropriate or were short while they and I prefer long. Here is what I have ordered though I still have time if it doesn’t work.
I need to remember Belk. I keep forgetting about them for dresses. I’m still in pre-game mode- no engagements yet- but just a quick look now and I saw several I like there.
Nordstrom has a whole bunch of nice red gowns! Like:

Unfortunately, for those of us who wear petite sizes, a lot of options are not available in petites. Yes, you can purchase a non-petite dress and have it tailored, but it’s a lot easier if you can purchase a dress that comes in petite sizes!
I never thought I’d feel sympathy for petite sizing but can definitely see the problem! There are plenty of petite long gowns, but almost nothing in a true red - just dark red like merlot, etc. Tell the wedding party that teal and red really don’t go together!
If someone wants to start spending up (it comes in red and black):
I have to agree. Would really have to see how the bride is pulling that one off.
Designers will pair these colors, but I really can’t fathom this one for a wedding.
Would really like to see pics of it, though. Maybe everything teal with red roses here and there?
I love that ruffle dress for say, New Year’s Eve, but that dress just screams “Look at me!” which is not what I think anyone should shout at a wedding, certainly not the MOB/G. OTOH, I own something very similar.
Before the pandemic, Nordstrom, Macy’s and Dillards carried a good variety of petite special occasion dresses. Unfortunately they are not to be found anymore, anywhere.
It’s a real loss. I really need a petite sized dress, I look like someone’s little frumpy sister in regular sized dresses.
Anthropologie still carries some petite dresses but they are not traditional MOB dresses. And they sell out in a hot minute.
Hoping the next kid opts for a tropical theme
I have seen a lot of petite long dresses I like online at department stores. It is the long, red petite combination that is very limited. Hopefully this one works. I had to order directly from the manufacturer, but it can be returned.
I wouldn’t think of red and teal as complementary wedding colors, but apparently such wedding color scheme is a thing!
From:
@BunsenBurner the pics you posted look like great colors together.
My thought…there are so many different “red” colors. Some are more orange hue, some more pink hue, etc. If the M picks a fire engine red and everyone else is in a different shade if red, it’s not going to look terrific!
Agree that reds have very different hues and shades, that can definitely clash. Blues and other colors seem safer but whatever the couple requests.
H just picked up his very nice Nordstrom navy suit with blue shirt for the wedding. S already approved of the photo we sent when H tried it on in dressing room weeks ago.
My nephew and his wife had a teal and red baseball theme for the reception. It worked.
