Geez. Some women definitely can get offended and upset if anyone else wears the same dress. Reminded me of the fancy gala event we attended eons ago. Husband’s employer bought a table at a charity gala and gave everyone in husband’s small group a ticket. The company also provided information about where they could rent their tuxes. Guess what the guys did? They walked into the shop and when asked about their color preference, almost all decided that making a choice was too much work and pointed to the mannequin on display stating they wanted their tuxes just like “what he is wearing.” So there were lots of jokes about looking like twins at the event! The wife of one of the directors was not amused by the joking… she made a lot of effort to make sure she and her husband were well coordinated. She bought a very expensive designer dress… a stunning gown! Imagine how pissed she was when she saw another woman wearing the same dress!!! Her husband laughed. I’m sure he was in the doghouse that night.
For my D’s wedding I told my mother that a friend would be in nearly the same pale pink dress that she owned and was thinking of wearing. So what did she do? She went out shopping and by chance bought a dress that, while a slightly different style, was the exact same fabric & color as mine! We didn’t know until we showed up nearly matching for the wedding. We did pose for the twinsies photos.
That’s a lovely dress! I’ll look at the site.
At son’s rehearsal dinner, I met a relative who complimented my short dress (a budget selection from Ross, but it looked good on me). Then she explained she had the same dress for the next day. She felt bad, and I said I’d just put on the jacket I brought. She smiled and said she had another backup outfit. It turns out that nice pants outfit was just perfect for the coolish damp wedding day - she looked great.
For my niece’s recent bridal shower, I had a dress picked out that was very similar to the one my mil was wearing. Thankfully I had a backup dress packed and wore that instead.
There are only so many options. It happens.
My rehearsal dinner dress for son’s wedding was surprisingly similar to MOB. Also a bit similar to sister (which I knew about). But hey, there were a lot of short dresses with small floral print in the stores this year. It’s all good.
You all are so good at finding these wedding outfits! Would anyone be able to help me find something to wear to a December wedding in Alabama? I’m not a dress person so I need to find something with pants. Everything I’ve seen online looks so matronly, but then I guess at 72 I am matronly .
I have a tummy so I can’t wear anything that emphasizes that part of me. And I need a fairly high neckline because I had a mastectomy and am pretty bony in the chest area. I like jumpsuits but most of the ones I’ve come across have deep V necklines or are too youthful. I’m short (5’4") so anything with a long duster looks silly on me.
I’d welcome any suggestions. Thanks!
Maybe a nice blouse or jacket with black pants like these? Comes in petite.

One of my closest friends is @ 5’4”. She recently wore a pantsuit with a skirt overlay to a wedding and she looked stunning.
I was thinking of this one. It’s in limited sizes right now unfortunately. You could wear a cami or shirt underneath
The Somerset Jumpsuit: Silk Edition | Anthropologie?
Here it is in another fabric
The Somerset Jumpsuit | Anthropologie?
This has a low neck but I think it could work with a top underneath. Has long sleeves
Hutch V-Neck Smocked-Waist Jumpsuit | Anthropologie?
This is what I was thinking of. From another dress, just an idea how to make a low cut work differently
If a jumpsuit works in the waist, it can be shortened. At 5’4” I don’t think petites would work
I’m 5’4” tall and petite dresses for me work well. I think one needs to try them on. Some petite brands work better than others.
For DDs wedding, I first looked in the regular sizes…and nothing fit right. Went to the petite section and that’s where my dress was found.
Even though I’m not in the market for a gown, I enjoy reading this thread and seeing the gorgeous finds.
There was one that made me chuckle (as in, if you don’t laugh you’ll cry) because its stated front length is at least two inches more than my height so you can imagine how much would have to be removed for re-hemming. Luckily, when it was my turn I found a midi-length that was just right for a full length MOB gown on my corgi body.
I wish this jumpsuit with sheer cape showed more photos. At $60, seems a good deal. No petite though.

@conmama, I love the dresses you linked, particularly the ones that have some architectural detail. I hope you’ll post after your search in Chicago.
My D is getting married in May and I’ve looked pretty extensively but haven’t found something I love. In my case, I need long and a jewel tone. D’s gown is gorgeous with lace but no real bling so I am not looking for bling. I ultimately made an appointment with a dress maker–have never done this type of thing before but am up for a rare splurge. I’ve already shared some inspiraton pictures but the top of this dress that someone linked (maybe soozievt–thank you!) is really lovely and would cover that not so lovely part of my upper arms.
I’d love to be able to wear a traditional bra but did finally find a strapless just recently that I didn’t need to tug at so am now more open to strapless. Appointment is Saturday so we’ll see.
Good luck! The top of that dress is lovely! I wish we were doing jewel tones, those are my colors.
I actually have those pants! The top I wore with them before was pre-mastectomy and wouldn’t work now. I’m looking for something now with a higher neckline.
That first one is beautiful but I don’t think I would like the look with another top underneath. Love the color, though!
That’s the same one that @vpa2019 linked to from Nordstrom and it’s nearly $50 cheaper! I like it very much. I think I’ll order from JCPenney and see how it fits! Thanks for the link
What a nice person.
