the neighborhood

I'm applying to CC in CU. I heard that the school was located in a bad area of NYC. Since I'm from TX, I really am not aware of stuff like that. Is that true? Does the campus feel safe? Any incidents?

The campus and the surrounding area is perfectly safe. Stats show that Columbia is the safest of the ivies. Also, NYC is now the safest of the big cities in the US.

Columbia has a bad reputation because it is about 5 blocks from Harlem and was dangerous 20-30 years ago.

Campus security and area policing are very good. The neighborhood is full of Columbia professors as well as students, and is increasingly upscale. Columbia has fewer incidents than the other urban Ivies.

morningside heights is probably safer than any college village you'll come across. did you attend their info session? they said something like: there are only three regions in the us that are safer than columbia's. i go to school in manhattan, and i'm pretty familiar with the campus. there's nothing you need to worry about, trust me.

that being said, basic street smarts are still necessary in new york city.
