You never know what the weather will be like in mid-March. I was there in early April a couple years ago, and it was sunny and 70 one day, then snowed the next… Be prepared for anything!

My DS broke his wrist playing a game of pick up football this past week, I was away on business when I got his text. He seemed to handle it pretty well, went to Health Services, who sent him to the ER for an Xray. His roomies went with him (nice kids), they were out in an hour.

When I spoke to him, he was trying to figure out how to do his school work with only his left hand working.

Sorry to hear about your son’s wrist. I expect if he talks with his profs they will make allowances for taking longer to type one handed.
Ellen

Katy, I hope your son heals quickly! My oldest son broke his leg just a month before he started college and was in a cast from toes to hip from July through December. Not a fun way to start college but he made lemonade out of the lemon he was handed.

D was supposed to be in a play on campus this weekend–they’ve been rehearsing for months. The first performance was last night; now the remaining three performances have been outright cancelled due to the weather, and the facility is booked for the rest of the year, so the production can’t be rescheduled. I guess I’m having a hard time understanding the decision. It’s not like the campus can just be shut down–thousands of students are there, storm or not. All the participants and expected attendees live on campus and would have no trouble making their way from the dorm to the theater, so what’s the big deal about keeping one building open to accommodate this event? Cast and crew are soooo disappointed. I feel bad for all of them.

Oh, MommaJ,

I feel so bad for them too!

My son said he expected classes to be cancelled because of the issue of getting to and from campus safely but it seems that the actors and the audience both predominantly live on campus!

There is teaching and support staff that do not reside on campus. Unfortunately, for your daughter and others, their safety must be considered. I would wonder, however, if it is truly
“impossible” to reschedule at a later date.

Katy,
how is your son’s wrist healing?

MommaJ,
any news of maybe the play being rescheduled anyway? S has enjoyed several productions–one of the girls in his group of friends is a theater person and the whole floor likes to go to support her. A really, really nice bunch of kids–they go to a lot of each others activities.

With the campus closed through tomorrow, there’s no one around to make a rescheduling decision, so I guess it’s all unknown for now. The cancellation of activities and lack of shuttle service has left D very antsy and bored, and she has not taken to my suggestion that extra studying would be a good way to fill the hours…It’s so ironic that we sent her hundreds of miles south to be snowed in, while we never got one flake from this weekend’s storm system!

D usually has 4 classes on Monday so she was very happy to have classes canceled tomorrow. She did say that she was planning to spend at least some of the time studying. She did note that the work won’t go away even if the classes don’t meet. Once they got their cable back so she could watch the Superbowl I have not heard too much complaining about the snow.
ELlen

just to let the “world” know that D made the “Dean list” this fall semester!! we are very happy!

Today classes canceled… she said she’ll study… and cook dinner for her and a couple of friends…Yesterday they watched the super bowl and made “nachos and guacamole”!

Did anyone’s kid go to the Giant Snowball Fight at Dupont Circle Saturday? It looked like a blast on the news stories. My daughter didn’t partake, as she had a particularly busy week and was a bit stressed about getting everything done. I told her to relax a little and enjoy this once(ish)-in-a-lifetime experience. Then I had to eat my words this morning when I talked to her and she told me she had gone to a party last night! (But she did get a lot of work done over the weekend. Or so she says.)
Ginger2, congrats to your daughter!

congrats to your D, Ginger!

S1 and his wife live near DuPont Circle and went to the big snowball fight…both of their offices have been closed since Friday. Lucky kids!

S3 (my AU student) has mentioned some giant snow fort?

My son did join the frat and walked there through the snow on Sunday. The pledges are expected to clean the house, but since he has a broken wrist his job is mostly about picking up stuff.

He seems to be coping with the wrist ok, although the classes that required stuff written out by hand are taking him a long time. He usually has 3 classes on Monday, one on-line. The prof had the on-line class anyway plus one of his regular classes met on-line also. I haven’t talked to him yet about what they are doing today.

Congratulations to ginger2’s D, and glad to hear katytibbs’ S is muddling through. D hasn’t had any classes of any type, and is pretty much going stir crazy. Do you suppose all those missed classes get made up? (Or do we get a refund? Ha!) I wasn’t surprised to hear that alcohol is running pretty freely through the campus for lack of anything else to do. D’s RA was dealing with a very drunk girl late in in the wee hours last night. I wish D had known what was coming and come home last Thursday. Even today’s storm has only left about 6 inches in our area, and we had none from the last one, so we’re a lot more functional than DC. I have to admit I’m pretty impressed that they’ve managed to keep the place stocked with food and have enough employees around to get everyone fed.

That’s the canopy that collapsed leading into MGC from the snow and wind.

According to an email sent today – the classes will not be made up because “This summer the deans spent time planning for an event that could significantly disrupt classes and we are now facing these conditions.”

I can attest to the complete cabin fever that we’re having. TDR is having some problems keeping the place stocked at peak times, and having plates and such for people to eat on. The last two nights I’ve just had cereal for dinner because they’ve run out of plates – the vending machines are all out at least in Letts and Anderson. Winds are still well over 40 and 50 miles an hour. So naturally I’m inside today. I don’t anticipate having school this week – and we’re supposed to get ‘snow showers’ on Monday…though I doubt it’ll be as much.

Also today: National Airport’s preliminary (2 p.m.) snow total of 54.9" for the 2009-2010 winter thus far puts D.C. above the previous high mark of 54.4" set way back in 1898-1899.

Thanks for the photo, AUTransfer. (About now are you wishing you were UMiamiTransfer?) The campus looks like Siberia on a bad day. Thank goodness they have internet service operating, or I think everyone would be raving maniacs by now.

I also have a S who is trapped in his apartment on a side street in Baltimore that hasn’t been plowed yet from the first storm–and the Md. Governor has ordered everyone off the roads anyway. He’s supposed to be working from home, but his computer at the office has shut down for some reason, so now he has remote access to nothing at all. Never thought I’d feel lucky to merely have a New England winter!

My D sent me that picture via a link to auexaminer.com, which I had no idea existed. It has a tad more info about classes not being made up, including information on a request to professors to stay in touch with students via Blackboard, etc., and continue teaching as much as they can. Apparently a (false) rumor was going around campus that the days would be made up during Spring Break. There’s also a video on AU Examiner, panning around campus.

My gosh the dining hall should have plates??? And enough food??? This is an emergency and they should be more prepared. What happens if you don’t have a computer?

Let’s organize an airlift to rescue the poor students who haven’t figured out yet that, in an emergency, they are actually capable of washing their own plates. Even those who don’t receive any financial aid! What a concept!

If you don’t have a computer, you DIE.
