<p>My personal observation is that our cognitive elite do community service to get their hours, put it on their resume or CV and not for the deeper reasons one should do it for. Also, these cognitive elite at some fundamental level do consider themselves superior and there is something of an arrogant condescension in the approach many take to community service.</p>

<p>Worked well for me a few years ago. Went to Wharton instead, though. With regard to the new Harvard, the current system is definitely better. If you want to go to school with a random sampling of the wealthy, complete with plenty of slackers, then try Trinity College or a host of other New England privates. Today’s Harvard at least tries to be a meritocracy. It’s not perfect at doing this, but it’s passable.</p>

<p>Go out to meet more people. Stay away from CC. Reading this is painful: you need a break from the crowd of people you normally hang out with.</p>
