Sorry to double post, but I’m past the edit time and I thought of something else: what about economic background? Do they care much about challenges overcome?

Thanks again, and my deepest apologies for this regrettable but necessary breach of message board etiquette. :P

Empires, I’m not an expert but here are some rough estimates from what I’ve seen:

I don’t know a lot about race and AA so I won’t comment on that.

About calling the office, I don’t think it would help that much. Even if your counselor is best buds with the dean, if you can’t deliver on your own as an applicant, you won’t have a good chance. There’s always the danger that the adcom will feel a bit offended by that tactic too. Maybe calling to ask about some application tips would be useful though.

Over the years, especially under the current president, Stanford has gravitated towards a more science/tech/engineering school, but Stanford is probably the most well-rounded school in the country (along with Berkeley) so all their departments are top-notch. Applying as a writer could help you stand out, since yep, a lot of kids apply as engineers. You’ll be “different” which could improve your chances.

No beawinner you don’t even need to apply…they send you a golden letter with an acceptance rate + a million dollars.

That was a dumb question of course you write the essays, but if your being recruited it doesn’t matter how bad they are. Then again if you were actually being recruited you would know this

Bescraze, if you’re not an athletic recruit yourself lay off my question. How would you know what I should and shouldn’t know already. I’m going to write your arrogant response off to immaturity. By the way, before you go around calling people “dumb” you should learn the difference between your and you’re. I believe most kids learn the difference sometime in elementary school.

Back to my “dumb” question for anyone out there with a legitimate answer. Do athletic recruits submit essays on their applications? Since I’ve gotten a smack down for asking this, I will say that my reason for doing so is because I heard this by way of rumor and want to confirm or deny. Thanks in advance to all with good intentions.

beawinner, the commonapp application and the Stanford supplement are required of ALL applicants to Stanford University. I’m pretty sure no university blindly accept athletes.

Yes, beawinner, athletes submit the Common App and fill out essays. I know this for a fact because I know 2 people pretty well who are athletes and they’ve told me a bit about the process. For many though, it’s kind of useless since almost all are guaranteed admission if they commit verbally - coaches run recruits by the admissions officers before apps are submitted. There are rare occasions, however, when the adcoms change their minds, but there’s a slim to none chance of that happening. Fill out the essays to the best of your ability and don’t leave anything to chance.

hpfan018 and bluebubbles, thanks for your informative replies. I thought when I heard this from someone that it didn’t quite pass the smell test. Or perhaps it was me mis-hearing.

Hi are there any UK admits to Stanford that would be willing to post a link to/put up their admission profiles?? I am looking to apply for 2010 entry and would really appreciate any advice as American academic and extracurricular terminology is a tad confusing for me (and therefore a little difficult to compare with my own)! Thank you in advance!!! :)

From the first post: “Instead of posting random threads with individual questions, just put up your query here (Keep chances threads separate though)”

hey guys!
Okay, here it goes…does stanford heavily consider freshman high school grades? i know that it is an extremely prestigious and sought after school, but do I still have a chance?
Thanks for the replies:)

heyy guys! this is rly helpful.
umm, for the supplementary essay where you have to write a letter to your future roommate, I wrote a first draft that’s pretty informal, like I’m actually writing to my future roommate. Is that bad? how did you guys handle that??

Hey guys. I did Karate for 7 years and I got my black belt when I was in Year 9 and after that I stopped training. I really love doing Karate so I have started coaching Karate to kids now (I am currently in Year 12) which I plan on doing for around 6 months. Would this EC still be valuable enough to count? If so, where would I put it on my app?
