4000 posts!
The resources you are going to get at Kent vs. your LPS are night and day. Also, 600 is not considered small for a boarding school. The really small ones are Groton, MX, SAS, SGS, which are < 400. Yes, gossip tends to travel faster at those schools, and social faux pas will become public knowledge in no time. Having said that, if you choose to stay on the right side of the fence, then you don’t have much to worry about.
Hkiss Boys JV Tennis followed me on instagram? I don’t play tennis, nor did l get into Hkiss.
Weird lol
i looked at who they follow and it’s mainly hkiss ‘24 and ‘25 students. they’ve been spam following for a while now i think.
Hey so this question has been on my mind, and I have no clue where to ask it. How do you know your score and keep track of it? At my current school we use PowerSchool for us to check our grades, but I’m not sure if it’s the same/ different portal for bs, or if it’s totally blind and you just receive a report card at the end of the semester.
Probably depends on the school
It’s not totally blind, you get graded assignments back and you can always check in with your teachers. But that public school thing where you and your parents can check every grade at any time, that is not common at boarding schools.
So they don’t use any online programs to keep track of things? I’ve had online grade portals at lps since fourth grade
That’ll be an adjustment.
I can’t speak to all schools, but at my kid’s there is definitely a portal for tracking assignments and grades. I think that is pretty standard. The difference is that parents don’t have access to it.
PA uses Canvas. Parents have no access. Parents have access to “the Hive” which only shows midterm and final term grades with teacher comments.
^^This is what George had when my kid was there.
Right, everything is online for assignments but that cannot be accessed by parents.
@CateCAParent does your kid’s show their running grade though? I haven’t heard of that at a BS. So after every assignment the term grade is updated?? Is that what they are talking about for LPS - I think it is. (my kids public school never had an online system so it is a marvel to me and so much parental overstep, but that’s a separate issue).
at my LPS, we have an online portal, but you can only see your final grade for that marking period. All assignment grades are given on the assignment physically, or on the assignment online if the assignment was online. Therefore, you should be able to figure out your grade by calculating the averages of assignments. But you can only be sure when the grades come out for that marking period(4 times a year)
Parents are able to see final marking period grades. Since most assignment grades are given out physically to the students, many students choose not to inform their parents of their grade.
This is true for kiddo’s school as well. She has access to her assignments/grades at all times, I do not.
This is surprising to us as well. In our LPS, both students and parents have a portal/app, PupilPath, that is updated with every grade entered by the teacher throughout the term. So I guess at BS, it is different!
Thanks everyone!
Yes, that’s what I meant. My school uses PowerSchool and the final grade is updated after every assignment. We also use Schoology, which shows an often inaccurate score tally. Parents have access to both. I went to a different school for a year (international BS), and they used the same system there as well.
@one1ofeach - I only get midtrimrster and trimester grades (trimester grades come with very thorough teacher comments). I can also see absences.
It is way less access than lps middle school. I am not sure how it compares to lps high school. It is much healthier for everyone, inho to not have parents that intimately involved with workload management.
It took a minute to get used to it - I never talk to teachers, except for voluntary parent teacher conferences 2x a year. I have never needed to hover over kiddo re:grades, but I liked knowing what he was working on. Now I have to ask him (gasp!).
The other thing I get notice on is significant health issues. And check ins with his advisor.
For me, it’s the same as my lps middle. Every assignment goes into the system after it’s graded and both the parents and students can see the grades right away.
