The Official M10 2021 Freakout Thread

Right. Ok, that’s what I thought. I don’t know of BS that use a system where the term grade is updated after each assignment.

Considering that when my DD was in LPS middle school there she had 2 teachers that made significant clerical errors were… It is useful for a parent to be able to see the gradebook. One teacher forgot to enter grades, which turned into zeros. Another teacher graded assignments out of 5 points, but entered in the grade book that the assignments were worth 100 points. 4/5 is passing; 4/100 is not. And the culture at the LPS seems to be that parental communications are weighted heavier than student’s.

A friend whose son attended prep school online this year had serious issues with the lack of transparency in grading, and what could be seen in the online portal. They thought the child was getting an A, when the kid was actually failing.

Then again, their child had trouble navigating the grading matrices used in some LPS classes. They’d complain on Facebook about how horrible the teacher was, I’d ask my kid (classmate) if that was true, my kid would direct me to the very straightforward grading matrix with most of the points being for following basic directions… I imagine such a kid would be a disaster at BS: failing, and not knowing why.

I miss the transparency, but my kid is capable of keeping up and advocating for herself. DD has had no problem adjusting academically to BS.

I wonder if AOs can easily deduce which kids can “take care of themselves” academically and which kids have required a lot of parental oversight.

Our lps that my DD used to go to had a system where parents could see final grades, report cards etc, but kids could see all graded assignments. They also had hard deadlines. We switched to cyber this year and things are not due with hard deadlines until the every 3 week progress check. However they will show as late if you miss the unenforced weekly deadlines. Also, I can see everything. We have learned that DD is not as productive without hard deadlines and can procrastinate. And that it stresses me out to check. Looking forward to her getting back to concrete deadlines and not having access!

I bet the absolutely can. The parent interview probably is a dead giveaway.

I started middle school totally into monitoring the school portal. By eighth grade I almost never checked it. I would hope that if a kid were seriously struggling at bs, the school would reach out to the parents. For grade mix ups, I can see middle school parents needing to help the kid learn how to talk to the teachers, but in high school the kids should be tackling at least the first round of talks themselves. Extenuating circumstances might require more parental involvement, though.

I think most people in my school have trouble advocating for themselves. The parents complain about the kids grades, blame it on the teachers, etc. My mom always told me if I thought something was off to stand up for myself, so I seek opportunity for things like extra credit, or when a grade is off or a mistake is made I make sure it’s fixed. My mom checks my report card because she likes having it, but overall I’m academically independent. I think it’s important for kids to become responsible for their report cards and grades.

This is the same for us too. I do know parents who have their kids log in info.

Parents and students also receive a midterm report (if today was end of term, this is what grades would be) so kids know if they need to improve.

I think the biggest difference anyone from LPS will see is the extensive, detailed and thoughtful comments from each teacher that will accompany each report card.

I just got my report card. A’s in 7 classes with a B+ in an 11th grade honors class!

I’m so happy my grades are getting better.

Before I had 2 B+s

Good job!!

Good job!

Love this! Teachers do, too. Teacher love when kids care about the class, not in a “No fair you didn’t give me an “A” kind of way,” but in a “I am paying attention and want to do well” kind of way.

Totally. It reflects in my grades too. 30% or our grade is participation, and it really helps me out since I actually answer questions haha.

Yes! I am as reknitrevo said

oh my gosh, i hate participation grades. my spanish teacher did that but we couldn’t raise our hands. she only ever picked random students. that meant that her favorites got the best grades

That’s great!

I’m not sure where to post this, so I’ll just post it here.

I have been spending a lot of time doing beach cleanups. Would I call this community service? I have an interview with a rolling admissions school next Monday and I’m trying to prepare a list of important things I’ve done.

Of course it does! Things that benefit those in your local area def count. Edit: I don’t even think it needs to be local, as long as it’s benefiting people.

Thanks! I always assumed that community service was just something you volunteer for with a nonprofit. I never thought it would be counted as an EC if you did it on your own time with no organization.

A nonprofit organization is good for confirmation, as they can give recs and such. However doing it yourself shows initiative that you take to give back to your community! Definitely gives them a sense that your a good person
