***The official Physics C self-study thread 2012-2013***

Hello! Opening this one up a bit early since it’s challenging.

I’m already 30-40% done with my E&M and it was way easier than I expected. I also self-studied mechanics this year and expecting a 4 or a 5.

What textbook and what review book would you recommend for Physics C?

my teacher doesn’t really teach so I guess I’m self-studying from Knight’s Physics for Scientists and Engineers

I’m self-studying using Serway’s Physics for Scientists and Engineers and Barron’s.
By the way, can anyone answer http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/sciences/1351084-physics-c-force-torque-work-question.html</a> please?

I’m just using PRs for Physics C at the moment. Although I’m probably going to look at stuff online for more problems to do. Practice is a good way to make sure one remembers things.

Where are you guys right now?

Has everyone here taken honors physics at their respective schools? I’m looking to skip honors physics and enroll directly into AP Physics C the coming school year. Just wondering what information would be helpful to review and such.

You don’t need H. Physics for AP Physics.

use a holliday and resnick textbook. plus torrey pines notes. plus previously released tests. plus previously released frq’s.

enough for a 5. all are findable online. use them well.

pr>barrons but neither are ideal

Self studied Mechanics last year (in like a couple weeks of actual [hardcore]work).

Will be doing E&M this year most likely, depending on where I decide to go to college, and their AP credit/placement policies, though I might start some early. Good luck to all :)

I am really bent on taking an AP Physics this year.
my school only offers b and C:mechanics.
plan on self-studying C:E/M two years later?

What should i do? i have all the math knowledge required. i am leaning towards C already because I hate to be behind in the physics. which do you recommend? I think I could do fine in C:mechanics, i am very math-apt…

I self studied C and I’m almost done with E&M right now. I personally think that E&M is easier than Mechanics.

@brandonkunyuplee definitely go for C mechanics if you’re strong in math. it’s a lot less cumbersome in terms of the scope of the curriculum than APB, and more colleges take it for actual credit.

If you’re strong in calc, AP C Mech is very straightforward, and even overlaps on some basic kinematics covered in AP Calc.

Can be covered in a month or so, or even less if you put the time in without a strong physics background.

Did anyone get a 5 on mechanics? If so, how much of the MC/FR did u complete and how did u feel about them?

@injectmagic

I scored a 5 on Mech this year. The MC was extremely easy, barring perhaps four or five of them. I answered every question on the
MC. The FR, though, was awful. Question three I answered probably four parts out of, like, six, but only really understood the first two parts… The first question tripped me up with an equation that I thought was one you simply memorized, but actually had to divulge from the data. The second question was simplistic- setting up a lab and explaining the mechanics of it. The third question… Dear God. It was awful. Very calculus based. Very, very difficult.

I came out expecting a 3/4, but I believe it was the MC and second FRQ that truly saved me.

^Wow that is me. MC was very easy. FR I did 1 and 2 maybe missing only a couple parts but number 3…i’m probably one of the people who did not earn a single point on it. So I guess that means I have a chance for a 5! Thanks for your response!

Hello everyone,

I will be taking AP Calculus BC and AP Physics B (C is not offered) my senior year. Would it be plausible to self-study C? If so, do you recommend doing Mechanics, E&M or both?

Thanks!
~Nate

Okay, I’m definitely going for Physics C!

Can you take Physics C with Calc AB instead of Calc BC? Will AB be enough?
