Lynch ran for 300 yards .... 125 yards forwards, 75 yards backwards and 100 yards sideways, with a fumble and a stupid penalty. I wonder if the team would be better off with a less spectacular but more stable presence in the backfield.

Well we won 42-17, that is all that matters. The bright spot on the team seems to be Nate Longshore, who rebounded excellently from last week's debacle.

Tennessee beat Air Force by only a point (31-30). There ya go.

Byerly,

Are you sure you know how to watch football? How about a better question: did you actually watch the game?

CalX,

You often gives data without giving the source. Are you some kind of all-knowing insiders? You, as an alum, somehow "knows" a lot of data that even current students find inaccessible. It will be great if you can cite their source.

I was at the game and I can say that Byerly's estimates aren't too far off.

Marshawn is going to run the way he runs. I don't see anyone complaining when that never quit attitude results in a 40 yard TD run.

He's may give his coach a heart attack if he continues to freelance like that.

Yeah right, think about THE FANS!

Sam, current students don't attend A.Dept. alumni fundraising events.

The source for the team GPA is Tedford himself. Feel free to accept it or reject it.

Byerly: talk about spoiled... Marshawn is the most talented player in the conference, and the greatest running back Cal has had in the past 15 years at least. Enjoy watching him while you can, he's probably going to the NFL next year, given the amount of wear and tear RBs have to take.

An amazing talent, indeed.

But I wonder if the freelancing will be as effective in the NFL.

The quarteback, on the other hand, looked very good.

I plan to be there for the Oregon game.

Lynch scored a nice TD on a "freelancing" run, when he got bounced back on the left side and turned to the other corner. The one run where he went backwards and got stuffed 15 yds behind the LOS was pretty bad though. Still, his career ypc stat is stratospheric, so I wouldn't overly criticize his approach to running.

Enjoy the Oregon game, it is the biggest home game this season, bigger than UCLA because Oregon is better. The Big Game of course is always fun but it's going to be a cakewalk.

Congrats on the win. I really thought Cal can do better.

But Mershawn is apparently poorly coached, if he got any. And he must've been listening too much Cal fans' praise, and really believe he is the one. Truth being told, he is not the most talented player in the conference for sure. He may be one of the better runningbacks, only considering his number of years in college. He can get away once a while when facing weak teams, but he will be the reason to lost some tough games. He was lucky he only got about 10 carries in UT game, so people still think he should get more plays and save Cal team. Not at all. His "freelancing" looked really trying, far from the show put on by Reggie Bush.

You still have Az St. Oregon is playing Oklahoma this weekend. If they win, then what you said will be true. But if they lose, then the game isn't gonna be as big of a deal.

Of course Cal is better. I seriously doubt that most other top football teams are carrying fairly high GPAs, or that the academic environment is more rigorous at other schools.
See, there you go again, asserting statements without proof. I am still waiting for somebody to demonstrate that the average GPA of the Cal football team is above a 3.0. You would think that these constant assertions would actually be backed up by tangible facts that can be viewed by all.

Leinart: of course he doesn't care about academics. He only cared about school as long as he was eligible to play football. He didn't even care to take ONE class while he could. Anyone who could take any class he wanted and had the time to do so but doesn't is clearly not interested in academics. You state that you know someone who took 10 classes in on term at MIT, as if Leinart had taken 10 units at USC...
If Leinart REALLY didn't care about academics, then why did he ever bother to nearly finish his degree in 4 years? Why do that? He could have just stretched out his coursework throughout all of his semesters at USC, and STILL not have graduated.

I don't see what Leinart did as particularly remarkable. He did what many other players did - did the exact minimum required to stay eligible. I am sure that there are Cal players who aren't particularly interested in academics and are only interested in doing the minimum necessary to stay eligible. There certainly were quite a few such players in the past (i.e. during the Holmoe era), especially those players who embroiled Cal in the cheating scandal.

I am not saying that Leinart is as academically strong as somebody who took 10 classes at MIT in one term. But I will tell you that that MIT guy took only 1 course at MIT in his final term, and only did it because it was required. This guy could have taken more classes, but he chose not to. Are you also going to accuse this guy of not being interested in academics? I didn't think so. That just proves that just because a guy takes only 1 class in a term does not automatically prove that that guy is not interested in academics. Like I said, if Leinart really wasn't interested in academics at all, he could have taken far fewer classes during his prior years at USC. Surely you don't need me to recount the Cal football players throughout the years who never even graduated at all, despite spending 5 years in the program.

It isn't unreasonable to extrapolate and state that the rate is higher now.
I have to agree with QW533 that you should wait for the facts to be published before you assert them. Or at least state that what you are saying are merely your guesses or estimates, rather than known facts.

Look, nobody is saying that Cal has a BAD football program. In fact, Cal is one of the few teams that has actually won a national championship (albeit none since the Great Depression). My point is that we shouldn't be overenthusiastic about the team. Cal football is simply unpredictable. It will reel off a bunch of good years (i.e. the early 90's), and then after that, have a bunch of bad years (i.e. the late 90's and early 2000's).

Matt Leinart certainly is not strongly academics focused. This fact doesn't deserve the bashing he got. CalX is just repeating what other flamers sprewed without much thinking himself.

Let's see what I just found:
