Kudos to many parents for doing a lot for their kids and not getting necessary appreciation, but I think many of us on CC (and anywhere) have had some ridiculous experiences with parents especially when it comes to college. If you want to vent, complain, or share funny stories about crazy (or maybe good) things your parents have done post it here.
For me, its mostly been dealing with my dad since my mom isn’t really involved outside of complaining about my work habits or reiterating something my dad said. But anyway, the worst part is his constant need to want to handle the process for me since he thinks he knows better because he’s older and a professor which has about 0 relation to admissions.
Some of the funny things he’s done so far is apparently apply to FAU for me because when I went to send my ACT scores they were a recipient and he asked me to use my computer and I saw something about FAU on there and worst of all I saw an open letter from those spam letters that a billion colleges send you at the top of the mail pile. When I asked him he said " nothing has happened yet" over and over and I finally got him to say " They have good scholarships". lol, still not planning on going to a place I didn’t even apply for on my own when I’m not a florida resident.
He also tries writing essays for me and wants me to submit them, but man are they bad. He literally uses this same, garbage one for ANY prompt that’s asks at all related to your field of study. For the UIUC essay, it asked about hat you do inside and outside of the classroom, but his essay had 0 examples. It even had citations it haha.
He wanted me to use another one for the common app but it was just whining about something my school did and how I had to do some extra stuff for it.
He also seems very bent on me doing EE/Comp engineering or a double major instead of CS for some reason and always puts Computer Engineering on apps even though I’m going for CS.
He has a typo in just about everything
And my favorite: " Nobody knows about this Brown, why did you apply there?"
Man, it wouldn’t be the same without him, but it’s sad to say he’s mostly been a hindrance in the college process outside of filling the FAFSA and CSS.
