The Philomathean Society?

I know Penn is known for its frats and its work hard play hard atmosphere, but I recently found some information on the Philomathean Society at Penn, and was wondering if anyone had more information?

From their website, it says: The Philomathean Society of the University of Pennsylvania exists for those who feel that college should be about more than getting a degree. It strives to promote the examined life in all its riotous splendor, and unites every discipline in the pursuit of its mission: “increasing the learning of the members and the academic prestige of the University.”

Founded in 1813, Philo is the oldest student group at the University and the oldest continually existing collegiate literary society in the United States. Throughout its nearly two hundred years of existence, the Society has pursued its mission of learning outside the classroom in whatever ways struck its membership best; a common answer to the question “what is Philo” is “whatever Philos want it to be.”

Any more information? It looks super old and cool for people who want to get more involved in intellectual discussion than frat life.

@erwenjohn422 it is a great organization. they hold great discussions and invite some great speakers. Also it has this very old feeling about it which is appealing. It is definitely a place for the intellectually curious people at Penn. You will find many super pre-professional and/or fratty people at Penn who are very intense in their academics and professional endeavors but have no great interest for intellectual endeavors. However you will also find just as many intellectually curious kids who wanna engage in great intellectually stimulating discussions about anything and everything. Also those two things are not mutually exclusive, you will also find people who are both.
