My BEST friend does not have good grades (mostly C's) and is not an excellent writer, but he has good characteristics and personalities and has been a good friend of mine since 8th grade. Should I let him write my evaluation even though he's not a good writer. In other words, is it okay if the evaluation is full of grammar, spelling, and mechanical errors?

I would say it really depends on what you mean by “full of grammar, spelling, and mechanical errors”. Admissions is definitely more concerned with what your friend can say about you. The goal is to get a different perceptive than what can be written down on your app. and your teacher recommendations. That said, a poorly written essay can detract from what your friend is trying to say.

I would suggest a middle ground. Have your friend write it but (if possible) encourage him to have it proof-read. If for what ever reason he is unwilling, it really would depend on whether or not his writing skills will detract from his message. I don’t think that it is likely that his poor writing skills are so bad that they outweigh all that he could contribute to the evaluation.

Have him write it, but ask if you can read over it first. If he is okay with that, I think that would be the way to go. If he isn’t, I would try to find someone else.

He’s a great friend, I’m pretty sure he’ll let me read over it.
