I was wondering how rigorous the quarter system is. I hear from people that the classes rush by so quick in the quarter system that its easy to forget a lot of the stuff learned.

As I've been accepted to both UCLA and Berkeley, I would also like to know the pros and cons of the quarter system and the semester system.

ive done semester and quarter and i love, love the quarter system. im really appreciative that i get the chance to take an extra 3 or 4 classes every year, even if it means an extra round of tests. we get a greater opportunity for a broader and more diverse education because we have more classes. it's cool.

I hear from people that the classes are so long in the semester system that its easy to forget a lot of the stuff learned [and then there's so much more to relearn before exams].

So yeah.. it goes both ways.

The benefit of the quarter system is preventing procrastination (or at least the reducing the effects).

quarter system is better than semester IMO. you have to stay on your feet, but at least you won't get so distracted and lazy that you'll get behind.

I like the Quarter System because it's synchronized with the four seasons, and aligned so that the major holidays always occur between each quarter.

I haven't done semester system at the college level, but I really love the quarter system. Like others have said, it really keeps you on your toes, but it's easier to learn that way since exams will be shorter, with less info to remember. You won't have breaks in the middle of the semester, so you don't have to worry about studying for midterms, writing papers, etc, while you're on say, spring break. Class schedules are also easier to handle, because if you have a tough one (and most likely, as a freshman, you won't get your top picks), hard professor, or just generally bad class, you won't have to deal with it for long. It's quick, true, but not too quick that it's unmanageable and you won't have to be studying all the time if you keep on top of things.

I think the quarter system is actually less work. Why? From what I have seen from friends, schools on the semester system tend to have more tests throughout the semester and more projects.

I like classes that have only a midterm and a final because all I have to do is study twice. (Although I will admit this can be risky if you happen to have a bad day or something)

I've only got 13 units and I'm drowning in the reading. I'm also working at least 30 hrs, but it was the same last quarter and it was so chill it was ridiculous. And one of my classes includes a lower div!- PS 10 that is keeping me busy with Plato and Sophocles on a daily basis.

You are very right. Units only represent the amount of lecture hours. I have labs that take up more time than all other classes combined. Labs should be worth 6+ units. :)

no, boelter, i'm not north campus.
i'm not south campus either.
i'm psych xD

...i'm taking 5 units stats 10 (some work) and 5 units GE seminar (some work), as well as 1 unit stats 89 (some work).
also, 5 units ling 20 (no work, review for me) and 5 units disney (sit back and enjoy!) :D

so, the "campus" units belong to isn't REALLY indicative of how much work they take. just depends on the person and their strengths/weaknesses/particular courseload xD

oh and allie... you're a graduating senior... you've EARNED a relaxing quarter so we won't begrudge you ;)
