Hey 2leashes, a St. Louis gal here, WUSTL–Washington University St. Louis goes by Wash U. Just a little fun fact to share…

Cal Poly Sloth. I like it.

Why did this thread stop? Come on this problem needs fixing!

Being from out of State, I really don’t get the big argument and difference between a “CSU” and a non-“CSU” California college. What are these non-CSU schools that are supposed to be so awesome?

Are the CSU’s supposed to be some kind of red haired stepchild or something? Do people frown upon grads from a CSU and look down their nose at them?

sutteyo: I’m originally from CA so I think the ‘CSU’ vs ‘non-CSU’ is comparing a college in the California State University (CSU) system to a school in the University of California (UC) system. When I graduated high school many years ago, there was more prestige attached to attending a UC school over a CSU school, but I believe many of those perceptions are fading, especially regarding a CSU like Cal Poly. UC schools are also more expensive than CSU’s (especially for us out-of-state parents), and that is primarily why our daughters are attending Cal Poly over UCSD or UCLA (and I am a UCLA alumni). For us, we believe a Cal Poly degree in engineering and architecture is just as (if not more) prestigious as one from most UC schools.

Almost no one outside of California understands the difference between CSU and UCs.

So what does cal poly Pomona call itself since they’re both cal poly’s. I always feel like I have to clarify which one I’m talking about.

Cal Poly SLO is the “official” Cal Poly.

Cal Poly Pomona is Cal Poly Pomona or CPP. But in LA many folks say Cal Poly locally.

It is unclear…

Cal Poly’s official name is California Polytechnic State University. San Luis Obispo is NOT part of the official name. But due to confusion with Pomona, SLO is often appended after the name for clarity sake.

Cal Poly is also the official shorthand name of the University.

Cal Poly Pomona’s official name is California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. So they are actually Cal State Poly, Pomona.

I think SLO has raised issue with CPP repeatedly over their use of SLO’s trademark of Cal Poly.

The two schools have crossed swords over this one before. I think that it is kinda crazy though. The schools were one institution:
As you can see the schools were one and the same until 1966. Then officially split. Muddy at best as to who owns the rights to Cal Poly. Quite frankly, it is easily distinguished by those that know…

If you mention you go to SLO
pronounced “slow”
there’s no doubt what college you attend.

Since I live in So Cal, when I mention Cal Poly, people always ask me which one. Maybe Cal Poly Pomona should just be called CPP? At least it’s shorter. I personally don’t like SLO because it reminds me of the word “slow”. I prefer Cal Poly, just wish there wasn’t the confusion with Pomona.
