Anyone can tell me about the reputation of IIT?

Went there for grad school 10 years ago, so take the following with a grain of salt.

The reputation varies widely by department/area. Architecture is extremely strong, certain engineering departments are also strong, sciences are generally weak. Like any 2nd tier school, the quality of faculty and students varies widely. In my own department there were a couple of faculty that were at the top of their areas, and a significant number of nobodys.

If you are smart and motivated you will do well anywhere. If you choose to go to IIT for whatever reason, you will stand out from the crowd easily, and will likely attract the attention of the good faculty. I graduated, and via a somewhat circuitous route got hired by THE top company in my area, and now have a bunch of Harvard, MIT, Yale, Caltech, NW, UIUC, Chicago, and other grads with longer tenure at the company working for me. Some of the worst candidates I have interviewed in recent years came from MIT.

The morale of the story? The name of the school matters only when searching for the first job. The rest is entirely in your hands.

thanks guy you woke me up from the dream
