The Required Physical Characteristics of an Ibanker...Height?

So I've been interested in banking for a couple years now, and I was just accepted into a couple of ivies, so that gives me a possibility of getting a gig.

But I just realized, as insecure as this sounds, is the world of banking or consulting or high finance barred from me? Last visit to the doctor told me I was 5' 5.5", and being tall apparently really matters. Can actual bankers give their two cents on height in the profession? I consider myself somewhat good-looking, but I am not European Caucasian and am well below the average American's height.

I'm somewhat interested in becoming a dentist. Should I change my career plans?

You’re kidding me.

Career plans based on height?
A ridiculous question needs a just as ridiculous.
Just work in the Hong Kong branch. ;)

Actually I can see height mattering, this isn’t engineering or some other profession full of self-deprivation and hatred, this is a profession where the appearances of self-confidence matters.

^ Not really. If you’re not self-confident in your appearance then how are you going to be self-confident in your work?

Lloyd Blankfein is 5’5 ~ 5’6.
Michael Bloomberg is 5’6 ~ 5’7.

Height is insignificant.

Good to hear. Can any actual bankers give insight on how tall people around them are that they work with?

The main things that concerned me were an article I read about how every inch you have adds another $780-something to your annual salary, a cc member i was pm-ing that mentioned height as a quality for ibankers, and also a similar question posed on Yahoo Answers that resulted in most posters agreeing, and one even admitting that unfortunately in his company, at a certain level in the corporate ladder, everyone is 6’ 3" and above.

You would think that $780/inch is insignificant when you’re making $100,000+/year. What’s the source on that article? As for the Yahoo! Answers post, that’s probably just a coincidence. It’s not like the person’s company intends on hiring people 6’3" and above after a certain level…

I’ve heard something very similar where every inch above 6 feet adds $5,000 to your salary. This could be true in corporate America where you don’t receive a performance related bonus. In investment banking the harder you work and the better you work the better your bonus. Do you think your bosses care how tall you are if you are making them money?

That is a fallacy, just because the two seem related doesn’t mean one causes another. It is correlation not causation. If you’re confident and you excel at what you’re doing, height won’t matter.

Dumbest thread ever. Lol, if you’ve ever been around any group of I-bankers, you’ll know that attractiveness isn’t one of their strong-suits.

bahaha thanks guys, this is making me feel better. Here’s the article:

[Taller People Earn More Money | LiveScience](Taller People Earn More Money | Live Science)

Well correlation is still correlation. And $789/inch adds up. Someone 6 feet will make $5000-something more than some one 5’ 5’'. Its in the article.

And considering I’m only about to be a college freshman, corporate America still matters to me. I mean, its not like I’m guaranteed to get into IB…

You guys are absolutely ■■■■■■■■.

While we are at it, is there a required or recommended p3n15 length to be successful in investment banking?

Haha considering I’m a short guy below 5’ 6", I love that I’m being made fun of for starting this thread.

But you guys do have to be admit that being overtly short hurts in the corporate world/interviews/getting jobs? Please call me an idiot…

You’re an idiot.

[

LOL, I was thinking the exact same thing.

[

](image)

LOL.

let me say this, you will not get into banking, but the reason won’t be your height. Bankers tend to discriminate against idiots

Short people are just generally more insecure and it’s blatantly obvious. Their noticeable insecurities are what prevents them from getting the job.

I recommend building up confidence and assertiveness.

Start with lifting weights and getting bigger. It will help you build unbelievable amounts of confidence.

dont go overboard on the weights. stocky short people are always the ones with the awful napoleon complex.
