The SSAT

What was their reasoning behind what they said?

What do you mean, "what they said?"

When they told you to write 1 paragraph. What was their reasoning when they said that?

I really don't know...I think because of the time constraint. They figure 5 minutes to plan, 5 minutes between the intro and conclusion, 10 minutes for your three points, and 5 minutes to check it over.

They just always made us prepare to write a single paragraph...I don't exactly know why.

I personally wouldn't listen to the staff at a school about what I'm able to do in a timed situation.

Well....congratulations for feeling that way?

Seriously, just because our school did something differently from you on the SSAT doesn't mean it's "wrong." Most of this years' graduates are going to their first-choice schools, so obviously it's a strategy that works, even if it's not YOURS. So deal with it and please stop making judgements about a school, faculty, and students you do not know.

well, it's true that the essay is ungraded. nothing is done to it, except being sent to the schools that you're applying to. so there's no way to get a score of any kind on the essay.

personally, i would not recommend writing a single paragraph on the essay. it would just seem like the essay is one run-on paragraph, with no organization or sense of direction. if you want to make two different points, then put them in two new paragraphs. don't combine them with your intro/conclusion. it makes for a messy essay. however, if you feel most comfortable with a one-paragraph essay and you think that your best writing would result from that, then go ahead.

i would try for the november testing date. i didn't want to take it too early, but i also didn't want the december date because it would take place during the week of mid-term exams. so, just work around your schedule.

My 1st d took no prep course, actually she just went in and took the test. Hmm, maybe she did look over the ssat/isee prep book briefly. I think I was the one who actually read and reviewed . d #2 wants to take some sort of prep course for the ssat. Did anyone actually try private tutoring? For the students that did prepare for the ssat, how did you go about doing your prep?

This is also a good site where you go and take prior SSAT tests.

http://www.testprepreview.com/ssat_practice.htm

They have different tests, organized by topic.
... and its free.

NewD, thanks so much for the site. I looked briefly at the site, it looks like it could be a winner.

Seasons, stop while you're ahead. You don't know what you're talking about. I have never met anyone who had Miss Porter's as first choice.

Hmm, why not MPS as a first choice school? It sure seems to have all the qualities of a bs that certainly would be many student's choice. Maybe I missed something

Why ever not? There are quite a few young women who choose a single sex education. Given that choice, Miss Porter's, IMHO, rises to the top.
