Which is more beneficial: volunteer work or hang out at the beach?

Which is more beneficial? It depends on whether you think getting a nice tan helps future endeavors.

A little bit of both. I'm going to be continuing my work in a research lab through the summer until I leave, but I'm not going to let it consume my summer. It's my last summer here (well I guess not really, but it's a special summer) and I'm going to have fun. I'm gonna work too, but I'm going to have fun and enjoy myself before going off to college.

What I meant to ask is if med school adcom would even consider anything prior to college.

A thought--Does your child have a preference? My guess is your child will most likely come up with ideas you may not have even thought of, and be really excited about doing it. They will end up learning things that will develop their abilities, character, and maybe academic intelligence which will help them in life. My brother spent the summer surfing in Hawaii-he is now making a gizzillion dollars--me-I worked in a remote village in Honduras--I don't make a gizzillion dollars-but I consider myself successful. We both had to pay our way in our summer endeavors. Think outside the box-you may surprise both yourself-and your child..My two cents...APOL-a mom

I don't see why not, as long as it's something meaningful. They probably won't care that you were in HOSA or the Pre-Med high school society, but if you did research or something like that (ESPECIALLY during senior year/right before going to college) then I'm sure they would. If anything, it'll show you're devoted to something.

Beach.

The summer before college should be spent relaxing.
